Oh, there's one more series that I keep up with that I wouldn't say is a favorite of mine, but I do enjoy watching it every week... Magic Kaito 1412. I don't know what it is about the series... it's just fairly innocent fun I guess?

i never even bothered with loghoz, too slow and premise lacked consequences. i would kill myself if i had to slog through 3 seasons of that fluff.

You mean how there's no permanent death like in SAO? I'd like to think that Log Horizon is more about making a life in the world rather than just trying to survive. Although, the one advantage is that Log Horizon doesn't turn into a silly, sappy love story. I liked the first cour of SAO, but the second was just weird... and SAO II was pretty lackluster compared to the original. The second cour with the Sleepless Knights was a bit better since it had a bit more of "dem feels".

The weird thing is that I found myself really wanting to watch more Log Horizon even though it may not come across as a terribly interesting anime. I didn't really get hooked by the first episode either.

i go with commiesubs for a/z, they fall behind sometimes but lately they are day of. the translations are very good and they do the op/ed lyrics and a bunch of misc text/signs/notes that horrible usually skips.

The biggest disadvantage for HorribleSubs for me is that I'll usually watch anime on my TV, and I rarely ever watch openings or endings. If a group isn't doing speedsubs (i.e. most groups but HorribleSubs), they normally have chapter entries, which allow me to skip past the OP/ED by just hitting the next button.

try fighters is keeping up with the quality tradition of all the build series as far as story and general pace. i still prefer the original build ova as it was better grounded in reality. it was nice seeing the sister again, cant remember if the little brother ever appeared in build fighters. i wouldnt mind seeing iori sei show up again, but everything he builds is so op and deus ex mecha/hidden power save the day. i do wish they spent just a little more time on introducing the rest of the teams.

Oh, now that you mentioned the sister, I'm starting to remember her a bit more. She was the class rep or something like that, and she eventually picked up Gunpla to get closer to Sei. I find that the ties to the original series is probably the hardest thing for me. For example, Yuuma's rival... isn't he from the same school as that weird Osakan from the first series? The one that got rejected by the girl from the inn?

Although, who the fudge is Lady? Was she in the original series? The only super good female fighter that I can remember was the one that went to the other world with Reiji.

Kind of off topic to the discussion but I like to watch anime music videos. It's exactly as it sounds. Someone takes a song and uses footage from an anime or several to make an interesting (hopefully) video.

I have been in depression ever since Naruto turned into crap. What shall I do, I haven't found anything I have been able to attach to. Granted I started reading and watching Naruto during a rough time in my life and used it to get away...

Do you mean the openings and end songs or the OST? I hate OP's and ED's I only like the Piano music in Anime right now. I've heard Guilty Crown is good.

Just skip all the fillers and then it should turn into a good show lol. Or you can just read the Manga. I'm aware you already knew that the Manga has ended so why not? After that you could watch the timeskip Movie, which is pretty good from reading the reviews.

aldnoah zero is going dumb.
I like it! Aldnoah is my 1st ever mech anime lol. Yep I'm newbie Anime watcher

Alright, I finally gave this a watch. At first, I thought the English one meant it had English subtitles, but I was met with the horror of an English dub! D: It looks good; I'll definitely have to give it a watch!

aldnoah zero is going dumb.

I finally watched the most recent episode (not the one from today), but while I still think it's not as good as it was, it's okay overall. I still think that it feels a bit too much like Gundam SEED.

No, he means when people take a song, and bits of anime and put them together. I haven't watched AMVs in a long time, but whenever I think of one, this one comes to mind. It always sticks out in my mind, because unlike a lot of them where it's just scenes put to music, this guy actually combined parts of Trigun and Cowboy Bebop to create a narrative to go along with the music. The same concept was also done to Michael Jackson's Smooth Criminal.

When I think of more "standard AMVs", I usually remember this Rurouni Kenshin AMV. It's another oooooold video, but this one features a lot of heavy action cut to some metal music. I can't hear Rammstein's Engel without thinking of this AMV.

I had serious doubts about Puella Magi Madoka, but gave it a try due to your suggestion. The first two episodes play out like an episode of Sailor Moon. Then episode 3 happened and it was like WTF I CAN'T BELIEVE THEY DID THAT.

This is either not a kids show, or Japan has VERY different standards on what constitutes a kids show compared to America. It's so dark and so depressing that it's colorful bright animation bellies it's true nature. I just can't look away.

Just started watching this. Holy shit, that got dark really fast. You think it's all going to be happy magical girls hunting witches. Bright happy colors means everyone's happy, right? Nope.

I generally don't go for newer comedies, especially ones that can get a little fan service-y, but Amagi Brilliant Park is hilarious and adorable at the same time. Still need to watch the last few episodes, but I really love this show. Some of the episodes scratch my Friendship is Magic itch, colorful magic beings saving their kingdom through joy and love.

So, the next anime season/cour/whatever is starting pretty soon. Here's a list of the upcoming/overflow series. Anyone have any that they're already looking at? I'll usually mark them up using the green (will check out), yellow (might check out), red (nope!) feature on that specific site.

Here's what I'm looking at so far...

Green:

  • Baby Steps 2
  • Dungeon ni Deai o Motomeru no wa Machigatteiru Darou ka? (...I think we need to shorten that one, stat!)
  • Kekkai Sensen
  • Lupin III
  • Nisekoi:
  • Shokugeki no Souma
  • Yahari Ore no Seishun Love Comedy wa Machigatteiru Zoku
  • Danna ga Nani o Itteiru ka Wakjaranai Ken 2-sure-me
Yellow:

  • Ameiro Cocoa
  • Gintama
  • Gunslinger Stratos: The Animation
  • Kyoukai no Rinne
  • Mikagura Gakuen Kumikyoku
  • Owari no Seraph
  • Re-Kan
  • Triage X
  • Yamadakun to Nananin no Majo
The common theme between a lot of those green-marked anime are that they're sequels to shows that I've seen -- Baby Steps 2, Nisekoi, Yahari Ore, and Danna ga. (I've actually never seen Lupin , but I want to check one out.)

EDIT:

...and for something completely random, I've been listening to the second opening from After War Gundam X for the better part of today.

I should have clarified popular and not as popular songs by artists who get played on the radio.
Something like these.

There's a dedicated site that started compiling them before youtube became popular

Previous season of which series? Lupin III? I figure that it's a separate story, so it won't matter that I've never seen anything else.

As for the others, I've already seen their first season. Unless you're asking for my opinion on those continuing series?

Eh, honestly... I thought it was kind of lackluster. I can't say that there was anything that I waited for with bated breath. I think I'd say that my favorite was Ansatsu Kyoushitsu. I kind of prefer the light-hearted slice-of-life series with some fun humor. A little fan serivce, which AnKyou has, is okay.

Speaking of fanservice, my second favorite is Saenai Heroine no Sodatekata. The worst part of that series is how there's blatant fanservice. Someone will be talking and they just focus the "camera" on her boobs. I'm not even saying that they angle the drawings downward, but the bosom takes up the full frame.

Some of the other series are okay. I still watch Aldnoah Zero, Gundam Build Fighters Try, and Log Horizon 2. However, the latter jumped the shark with their meme-tacular
Aliens!
reasoning.

Anyone check out some of the new anime? I've watched a few, and here are some thoughts:

Shokugeki no Soma - This is a show about a boy who wants to eventually take over his father's restaurant (whom he has a very awkward, competitive relationship with). I don't want to talk about too much more, because that's actually the plot of the first episode. In other words, the whole first episode is pretty much setup for the real plot of the series, and as such, I can't really get a feel for what I think about it. However, holy ecchi, Batman! This show takes a look at other shows, says, "You call that ecchi?", and takes it up to 11. Yes, that is in fact an actual screenshot from the series. Overall, I think the ecchi is a little awkward, but since I haven't had a good feel for the series yet (given it hasn't settled in its main plot), I don't want to pass judgment yet.

Initial Verdict: Not sure... will watch more to see.

Dungeon ni Deai o Motomeru no wa Machigatteiru no Darou ka - I think this series has some good possibility. This one is about gods coming down to the "normal world" to live amongst the people. People pledge fealty to the gods and join their clan. The story follows this one guy who's the sole member of this goddess's clan. Now, this is also a bit of an ecchi series, but it isn't too bad. Most of it is just suggestive humor of the goddess hitting on the main character, but it's fairly tame. The story starts off with the main character pinned down in a dungeon by a huge minotaur when he's saved by this girl.... who he instantly falls for. The main character is a bit of a wuss, which is usually a detractor for a series, but at least he's one of those strong-willed characters. So far, this is the new one that I'm looking forward to the most.

Initial Verdict: Will watch.

Re-Kan! - Ugh. This series is just terrible. I almost turned it off a few times, but I said that I had to watch it for the good of humanity! The animation is terrible. It looks like they used far too few tweening images. They also use just about any stereotypical anime expression about every few seconds. The art... bad. It looks like a poor visual novel. Honestly, the story in itself could actually be decent, but it's still pretty shitty. It's a slice-of-life series, but it just isn't that interesting.

Initial Verdict: No.

Owari no Seraph - I wasn't too sure what to think about this series after I read about it. It's about vampires that release a virus that kills off anyone in the human population above 13. "More vampires... yay." However, this one might actually have a bit of potential to it. Similar to Shokugeki no Soma, the whole first episode looks like setup for the main plot. Honestly, when I was first watching it, I suspected that the series was going to go a certain way (
I figured they'd have the one kid turned into a vampire and the main character would end up having to fight against him
, but I was... well, I'm not sure if I can say pleasantly surprised, but it was good to see that I was wrong when
the mean, creepy, BL vampire killed the friend of the main character and his entire "family".

Initial Verdict: Will watch.

Denpa Kyoushi - This feels like a somewhat poorly animated, second-rate Great Teacher Onizuka. The only difference is that instead of a ex-gang leader, the teacher is an otaku genius. I don't know... I might give it an episode or two to see if it can catch my interest, but I wasn't all that enthralled by what I saw in the first episode.

Initial Verdict: Not sure... will watch more to see.

Arslan Senki - This is another hard one to really discuss because the first episode seemed like setup. The series is about a prince who isn't exactly ready to assume the throne from his tough, battle-scorn father, and it's hard to miss that fact as it's shoved in your face the whole first episode. However, you get the feeling that this guy's going to be less about fighting and more of the intellectual type. It could be interesting. I'll probably give it a few more episodes to see where it's going.

Initial Verdict: Not sure... will watch more to see.

Gunslinger Stratos The Animation - This looks like it's one of those weird sci-fi stories, and I'm really not sure what's going on. The first episode also seemed to consist entirely of setup, but the characters are at least kind of interesting. The story takes place in the future where Japan has been split up based upon corporation control (or at least that's what it sounded like), and people are given tasks based upon their genetic potential. However, the setting takes a strange turn by the end, but the previews show that to not be the case. So, we'll see where this one goes.

Initial Verdict: Not sure... will watch more to see.

Plastic Memories - I originally missed this series when I was looking up things to watch, and I'm glad that I decided to check it out. The series deals with a corporation that makes lifelike androids that can only remain properly functional for a certain period of time. Well, it's the job of a specific department, which is where our main character goes to work in the first episode, to get those units back before they malfunction. Now, that sounds like it might be more of an action series (e.g. the movie Repo Man), but I'll be frank... it's not. The series seems to focus far more on the bond formed between humans and human-like robots, and the reclamation process takes that quite seriously. So, it's definitely more of a low-key, sci-fi drama.

Initial Verdict: Will watch.
