Anyone check out some of the new anime? I've watched a few, and here are some thoughts:

Shokugeki no Soma - This is a show about a boy who wants to eventually take over his father's restaurant (whom he has a very awkward, competitive relationship with). I don't want to talk about too much more, because that's actually the plot of the first episode. In other words, the whole first episode is pretty much setup for the real plot of the series, and as such, I can't really get a feel for what I think about it. However, holy ecchi, Batman! This show takes a look at other shows, says, "You call that ecchi?", and takes it up to 11. Yes, that is in fact an actual screenshot from the series. Overall, I think the ecchi is a little awkward, but since I haven't had a good feel for the series yet (given it hasn't settled in its main plot), I don't want to pass judgment yet.

Dungeon ni Deai o Motomeru no wa Machigatteiru no Darou ka - I think this series has some good possibility. This one is about gods coming down to the "normal world" to live amongst the people. People pledge fealty to the gods and join their clan. The story follows this one guy who's the sole member of this goddess's clan. Now, this is also a bit of an ecchi series, but it isn't too bad. Most of it is just suggestive humor of the goddess hitting on the main character, but it's fairly tame. The story starts off with the main character pinned down in a dungeon by a huge minotaur when he's saved by this girl.... who he instantly falls for. The main character is a bit of a wuss, which is usually a detractor for a series, but at least he's one of those strong-willed characters. So far, this is the new one that I'm looking forward to the most.

Re-Kan! - Ugh. This series is just terrible. I almost turned it off a few times, but I said that I had to watch it for the good of humanity! The animation is terrible. It looks like they used far too few tweening images. They also use just about any stereotypical anime expression about every few seconds. The art... bad. It looks like a poor visual novel. Honestly, the story in itself could actually be decent, but it's still pretty shitty. It's a slice-of-life series, but it just isn't that interesting.

Owari no Seraph - I wasn't too sure what to think about this series after I read about it. It's about vampires that release a virus that kills off anyone in the human population above 13. "More vampires... yay." However, this one might actually have a bit of potential to it. Similar to Shokugeki no Soma, the whole first episode looks like setup for the main plot. Honestly, when I was first watching it, I suspected that the series was going to go a certain way (
I figured they'd have the one kid turned into a vampire and the main character would end up having to fight against him
, but I was... well, I'm not sure if I can say pleasantly surprised, but it was good to see that I was wrong when
the mean, creepy, BL vampire killed the friend of the main character and his entire "family".

Denpa Kyoushi - This feels like a somewhat poorly animated, second-rate Great Teacher Onizuka. The only difference is that instead of a ex-gang leader, the teacher is an otaku genius. I don't know... I might give it an episode or two to see if it can catch my interest, but I wasn't all that enthralled by what I saw in the first episode.

Arslan Senki - This is another hard one to really discuss because the first episode seemed like setup. The series is about a prince who isn't exactly ready to assume the throne from his tough, battle-scorn father, and it's hard to miss that fact as it's shoved in your face the whole first episode. However, you get the feeling that this guy's going to be less about fighting and more of the intellectual type. It could be interesting. I'll probably give it a few more episodes to see where it's going.

Gunslinger Stratos The Animation - This looks like it's one of those weird sci-fi stories, and I'm really not sure what's going on. The first episode also seemed to consist entirely of setup, but the characters are at least kind of interesting. The story takes place in the future where Japan has been split up based upon corporation control (or at least that's what it sounded like), and people are given tasks based upon their genetic potential. However, the setting takes a strange turn by the end, but the previews show that to not be the case. So, we'll see where this one goes.

Plastic Memories - I originally missed this series when I was looking up things to watch, and I'm glad that I decided to check it out. The series deals with a corporation that makes lifelike androids that can only remain properly functional for a certain period of time. Well, it's the job of a specific department, which is where our main character goes to work in the first episode, to get those units back before they malfunction. Now, that sounds like it might be more of an action series (e.g. the movie Repo Man), but I'll be frank... it's not. The series seems to focus far more on the bond formed between humans and human-like robots, and the reclamation process takes that quite seriously. So, it's definitely more of a low-key, sci-fi drama.
Super duper little reviews again!
I have not seen any above but I'm looking forward to start http://myanimelist.net/anime/26243/Owari_no_Seraph

Hm... I'll modify that initial thoughts post with a quick-n-dirty note about whether I intend to keep watching each series.

If you were going to ask, that's probably the one out of all of those that I'd recommend for you. Although, I can't be too sure how the following episodes will match up to the first since the location seems to change quite a bit. However, the show will probably remain somewhat violent.

Nope. Never really got into Steins;Gate. :$

I think I've heard of this one, but I've never seen it. I'll give it a look, but there are a few more new anime that I need to check out! I've got Kekkai Sensen and Nagato Yuki-chan no Shoushitsu. Although, I'm one of the few people that has never seen Haruhi, so I'm not sure if I'll really get the latter.

The first episode just seemed too weird to me. I find that there are times when stories like to be weird because it seems deep, and that ends up turning me off. But I probably ought to give it a few more episodes at least. I did like Robotics;Notes (or at least most of it), but that's mostly because it had robots.

No OreGairu 2? Or did you not watch or like the first season?

You have to really commit if you are going to watch Steins;Gate. It can be really tough for some people to get through the first part of the series as it's pretty slow (it was really tough for me the first time; now not really). The payoff is that when it picks up, it becomes really amazing. It's about 250 times better than Robotics;Notes though.

Heh... I actually had no idea that was the "official nickname" (it worked when I typed it into AniDB, so it works for me) for the show. I always just call it Yahari Ore. I did watch the original, but I'm waiting to see if the same group that I got the first season (Doki) is going to do the second. Ah, whatever... I'll just get it from FFF. If you ignore the often ridiculous file sizes, they usually do a good job with everything else.

Although, I was mostly trying to talk more about newer anime than returning stuff. That's why I didn't talk about Baby Steps 2 as I already saw the first episode of that.

Yeah, I should probably give it another shot. I mean... if I could watch Re-Kan! all the way through, I'm sure I can watch at least another episode of Steins;Gate. Although, I think Robotics;Notes appealed to me a bit because of the mecha aspect and I liked the characters.

The story may be shitty in your eyes but the gore is pretty top!
I have not seen Haruchi also, but is that series a sequel or spin off?

Weird? What world are you living in? lol, no seriously Stiens Gate is the best!

Ugh, this is the one thing that I always hate when talking about anime. When you say season 1 and 2, do you mean episodes 1-12 (season one) and 13-24 (season two) of season one of the show? Although, to be fair, those two shows are a little different, because their continuation uses a number to designate it (e.g. Sword Art Online II) where some shows don't (e.g. the new season of Baby Steps, which is just Baby Steps (2015)). I remember talking to someone about Sword Art Online, and I got confused when they were talking about season two since the second series wasn't out yet.

Yeah, it can get pretty confusing. In this case I meant SAO 1 and SAO 2.

Ah, yeah... I was pretty disappointed by Sword Art Online II and Log Horizon II. I still haven't finished the last episode of the latter. Frankly, I'm worried that the series is going to completely ruin itself with the silly
...Aliens!
thing that they've been doing. I thought SAO faltered a lot after the first cour of the first series. I found the appeal to be experiencing the player (Kirito) living through this game world where death is permanent, but once that was over, it wasn't very interesting. It was really just more of a generic fantasy anime. Also, the whole mother/father relationship with that AI (Yui?) was just kind of creepy.

I think people get confused when they try to relate "seasons" with cours. Part of it is that, at least here, production blocks of TV shows are tied to the length of a season. That's not the case with Japan, or specifically anime. A cour doesn't define the actual "seasons" as it relates to the series themselves. So a "season" of a show can air through multiple cour without being multiple "seasons."

When it comes to seasons as it relates to series, it's really what the production committee defines a season as (generally the production block of episodes that have been greenlit). So, a 1 cour show can be one season, but so can a 2 cour, 3 cour, 4 cour, and beyond all be one season of a series. Split cour are also generally the same season. If the episode numbers don't reset, you are generally in the same season (with a few rare exceptions). Who has ever said they watched Eva season 2 (a 2 cour show)? Or, Gundam Seed season 2, 3, or 4 (a 4 cour show)? SAO is a 2 cour, 1 season show. SAO II is the 2nd season.

It used to be fairly cut and dry, but it seems there is much confusion about it these days.

It probably doesn't help that we tend to call them "anime seasons", and that they're normally denoted by an actual season name. For example, this is the Spring "anime season" right now.

It used to be fairly cut and dry, but it seems there is much confusion about it these days.

I think part of it also comes down to the way anime is distributed and/or broadcast in America. Those huge shounen shows often get broken down into seasons when they're really just one huge run.

Yeah, agreed. I mean the subsequent cours aren't bad, just not on par with the very first.

Honestly... I skip most OP/EDs! It has to be really good for me to not just hit the Next button. It's got TMR on there though, so it gets points for that. I bought his Geisha Boy album recently. It's hard to find Japanese music without paying ridiculous import prices, but that has a lot of his good anime songs on it. There are a few others that I'd like, but it's a good start.

Heh, I know what you mean. That's what the BR chapter markers are for

It's unusual for TMR and Kalafina to make it into the released BR recordings, since their labels are usually picky about that.

Heck, it was only in 2013's Animelo BR that Eir Aoi and Luna Haruna's performances were released.

I've got a few new anime to watch, but I only got to one last night...

Kyoukai no Rinne - Honestly, I didn't suspect much from this one when looking up the slew of new anime. However, after watching it, I was pleasantly surprised. Similar to Re-Kan! it also deals with a girl that can see ghosts, but that's pretty much where the similarities end. The story focuses on the aforementioned girl and her ability, which mixes her up with a boy known as Rinne that appears to have some otherworldly aspects to him. Most of it is explained in the first episode, but I won't give it away. My only worry is that the show plays a lot off the gag that Rinne is poor, and the last thing you want is a one-note comedy.

It kind of feels like a weird mix between Gugure! Kokkuri-san and InuYasha.

Initial Verdict: Will watch, but with a bit of scrutiny!

Saw punch line and I liked the premise of the protagonist wiping out life on earth when he gets an eyeful of girl's underwear :awe:

Good thing is he is currently a spirit and can travel back in time to do it over.

Saw the ending of Aldnoah Zero.
I'm pretty sure we thought most of the main cast would die but no, not a single character or support character died and most importantly not even SLAINE!? WTF is this? Pokemon? Slaine gets a 48 hour community service or life in prison? Sorry I give this series a 3.5/10. Don't really care anyways since I hate mecha. So many bad stuff to say, I don't even know where to start.
Brilliant ending 10/10! *roll eyes*

Ore Monogatari!! - So, I originally passed on this show, because it was listed as shoujo, and I generally don't like shoujo anime. However, this isn't your average shoujo anime. No, no, my friend, because it isn't many bishies, one girl, one choice~! The story focuses on this tall, brutish guy who has never had much luck with women. He's not a delinquent or anything like that... the women just all happen to fall for his bishounen friend... every time. He runs into this girl with ridiculously huge... eyes, and he instantly falls for her. Unfortunately, he assumes that -- like all the times before -- she has fallen for his friend. Overall, I think it's a fun watch with some amusing characters.

Initial Verdict: Will watch.

Ng plus plex xd

I use PLEX quite a bit for anime, but it can be quite bothersome at times. My HTPCs are full-fledged machines (e.g. no transcoding, burning in, etc.), and I've had straight-to-desktop crashes on PLEX caused by subtitles. In fact, Nisekoi: episode 1 had a crash around 4 minutes in. I had to watch past the scene on my phone, and then go back to my TV.
