Before? I started in the 80s, on VHS
yh exactly! The newer generations wouldn't dare to watch an old series (some will but i doubt most of them won't) first hence why Naer ask us what anime should be his first anime or whatever xD
I was born in 1993 and my first Anime encounter was mega man lol. Show sucks so bad haha then Pokemon > Digimon > Doreman > sailormoon > conan > and i think yugioh all sucks but didnt care i just watch it back in the day. Pokemon was the best that is all I can say

btw back in the day it was all in English and i didn't even understand English back then and i stilled carried on watching even though i didnt understand a word lol. No Swedish dub

That's funny! When I first started with anime (and JPop), I didn't know a lick of Japanese.
I spoke English (my best), Mandarin, Malay, Teochew, Hokkien, and some Cantonese.

Thank you senpais
Whodaplayer is not entirely right. The written language is Chinese and the official dialect is Mandarin. However, if you read the written Chinese in Taiwanese, it would not make sense. Grammar is actually different. Throw in slang and it is completely out the window.

For example, I can not read Cantonese slang at all even though it uses Chinese characters.

I watched Blame! last night, and I really couldn't get into the CG-animated characters. The movement just lacked a lot of fluidity, which is weird since a computer can animate all of the frames compared to an animator having to tween them. The story was fine, but man... my eyes were literally hurting from watching it. :\

This season is pretty disappointing.

Really? I think the season has been fine so far. As long as I can find a couple that I'm interested in watching, I'm usually good. I actually started watching a series that kind of surprised me...

Ballroom e Youkoso - I did earmark this one to check it out, but I didn't really have much hope for it. It has an obvious shoujo style to it, so I expected more of a shoujo anime; however, it's really not. The show focuses on our main character who gets saved from some thugs, and the man ends up being a dance instructor. He somewhat reluctantly ends up taking a few lessons... partly because he was intrigued by a female schoolmate that goes there. The show has pretty good art, some fun characters (the man who saved him will remind you a lot of Onizuka), and a fine plot. Although, for some reason, they draw people with some weird expressions on their face while dancing. It's like they're mimicking Christian Bale's crazy faces from American Psycho.

I also started finally watching Shigatsu wa Kimi no Uso. I think I skipped it back when it aired because it's a music-centric anime, and I usually don't watch music anime. The only music anime that comes to mind that I enjoyed was Detroit Metal City, but that's definitely not the same as Shigatsu wa Kimi no Uso.

Season has been really bad imo. Only 2 good anime worth watching is Boku no Academia and New Game S2.

Shigatsu wa Kimi no Uso is my Number 1 Anime of all time because I play Piano myself and the series literally killed me
The Piano playing is real and the fingering and rhythm are real too so what you see on screen it is mimicked in real life (does that make sense?) no fake auto tuned and fake Piano animation everything is real

Nodame Cantabile is also good and it is my 4th best anime in my top 10 Anime of all time and it is a Piano anime too, the comedy is gold! ^)^

both series 10/10 must watch even if you don't play music or like music!

So what is the difference between Magma and Anime? We are headed to Japan for 2-3 weeks in Nov. and I'm going to buy some Naruto / Dragon Ball Z stuff for my kids. Not that they will be able to read it, but they will enjoy having an authentic Japanese book/game from Japan. Can't wait to go. I went about 3 years ago for work and I fell in love with Kyoto and Osaka. I didn't get a chance to go to Tokyo, but we are planning on spending 5 days there and the other 5 in Kyoto/Osaka and another city.

Gotcha, so Anime is video. Never knew the difference. So what is something like Naruto considered? It was a comic turned TV show. Is it considered both or Manga because that was first?

It's both. Some start as light novels.

they're 2 separate things

Naruto has a manga and it has an anime

also, so far so good on princess principal

"No" *bang* "No" *bang* "No" *bang* "No" *bang*

i'm apparently very bad about picking up on lots of details so after i watch an episode, i have to go back and watch a reactor to see what completely obvious stuff i totally missed

Don't buy Manga in Japan lol. They will most likely be in Japanese (correct me if I'm wrong and go ahead if you kids can read jap). It is best to buy Manga online or view/download Manga online. Manga is very expensive and IMO it's not worth buying because you can buy the digital versions (tablets) much cheaper. It's your choice ofc but I would only buy Manga if you're a collector or otaku weabo lol.

Naruto started as a Manga then it got popular and when they got popular, monies started to roll in and they were making bank and then they use the monies to make the TV series and the TV series made more money and now they are swimming in money.
So what you see in the TV series (Anime) you will see in the Manga. So for example, if chapter 1 Naruto dies then Episode 1 in the TV series Naruto will die, but some (well most) Anime dont follow the Manga faithfully because it costs money to animate x y z scenes like flashy fights etc.
Oh and sometimes TV series start first then Manga.

Have fun in Japan I'm sure you and your family will have a brilliant time! Take some pics?

Anime (TV/movies) almost always start as a Manga (comic) Light novel (basically a book) or a Visual Novel ("video game") basically a txt story with visuals

Thanks for all the replies. Good to know the difference between the two. Really looking forward to the trip. I felt a little guilty going for work and now I'm taking the wife for our anniversary. I loved the people, culture and history. We were looking at Akihabara today and it looks insane!
