Todays Question

I want to check to see if a character in a particular word say PONTIFICATION has any thing other than alphabetical characters in it. For example say the word is PONTI&&***FIC)(ATION, I want to extract non alpha characters out of this. How would I do this in SQL? I can't find any sort of help in the help files.

Question 1

I'm trying to do a copy with a false condition to get all the rows into a new table but can't figure out the syntax

Isn't this supposed to be right?

Select * from Table_1
INTO Table_2
where 1 =2

Table_2 will therefore be created with all column headers but no actual data, which is what I want. I am getting a syntax error though.

Any help?

<< shouldn't you have to specify what field is =1

ex fieldA = 1 and fieldb =2 ?
>>

* does everything if thats what you're asking.

Three questions...

What SQL DBMS (MS SQL Server, IBM DB2, Oracle)?

Do you have Create Table Permissions in that Database?

Is this a Temporary table... and if not, do you have the "select into/bluckcopy" option set to true?

ahh... its that simple syntax stuff that always throws me off too. I didn't look that carefully.

Yeah... SQL Server is great... not the most powerfull, but definitely the most fun to write stuff for in my opinion... gotta love T-SQL. Unfortunately I only get to do half my stuff in SQL Server and have to work on IBM DB2 on the AS/400 too often.

Good luck with your stuff.

I don't understand when people say its not powerful. What do you mean by that?

SQL server also owns j00. Oracle is the top dog but hardly anybody needs that. Unless you are a massive, stupidly large company it just isn't needed. I have many friends working in IT and only one of us has even touched it professionally because none of us work on projects that require Oracle's power because it has a pretty nasty cost associated with it. I know one person who has worked with DB2. The rest of us make fun of that person

I guess what I mean by that is, if you have a mission critical application, you tend to be better off going with a proprietary design like IBM or something for the only reason that it tends to be more reliable (as in since IBM pretty much has control over every part of the machine, there is less likely going to be a hardware/software problem). As for speed, ease of use, etc., I love SQL server (well 7.0 and 2000). Also, with Windows 2000 being quite the stable operating system, SQL server is getting more and more attention. I have been trying to get my company to move a lot of their database stuff over the SQL server, but since myself and the few people who work under me are the only ones who do PC programming/SQL server, they are reluctant to move in that direction. I understand where you could have a problem with people saying SQL server is not "powerfull" enough... I really used the wrong term as I argue that same point with people here at work all the time. And for the price, you really can't beat SQL Server.
