Used to commute to there for projects out of Nellis.

How you handle it will be related to your attitude and desire for city comforts.

Realize that Vegas and LA are not that far away for week-end entertainment.

I grew up in Lancaster ... graduated from Antelope Valley High. My family spent a lot of time in the mountains during the summer. We would do day trips up around Littlerock or the Devil's Punchbowl. We would take week-long trips up to the Sierra National Forest. One of my favorite spots was the Tyee Lake area just outside of Bishop.

There's also some decent Skiing during the winter, if you're in to that. Snow Summit and Snow Valley are pretty close, Bear Mountain is better though. Mammoth is good for a weekend trip.

It was also fun to drive down to Hollywood and be a member of a "live studio audience". It's been a few years ... they used to let you in for free if it was just you and a friend or two. They would actually pay for groups to come watch some shows being taped.

I was stationed in China Lake for 3 years.
You wont find too much to keep you entertained locally. Either get into off-roading and make frequent mountain trips OR, go to the big cites on a regular basis and try to have some fun.
Do NOT sit around complaining how much things suck. Thats the worst thing you can do and its all your fault.
Do you guys have a morale office of some sort? You can probably get dirt cheap tickets to all kinds of cool shit. Or join a club. An off-road club.
Or a gun range.
Do SOMETHING, I dont care what, just get involved.
If heading out to the big city and wandering around a shopping mall is your thing, do it. I think thats kind of gay, but who the fuck am I to judge?

haha im not worried about being bored to death. im asking if anyone works on base, because it takes 30 min to drive off base, and was looking for someone (possbily techie, anandtech persona type) to maybe meet and have lunch with on base. or find a gym buddy, bball/swimming/ working out in a very non gay way

Moving to Lancaster in 5 months. Was out there in January. Please let me know if you find something to do that doesn't involve going outside. Didn't check out the gun range on base though.

30 minutes, what gate? It was only ~15 minutes for me at West Gate. Would have been less at South Gate.

oh i meant 15 min to west gate, and back. so lunches outside of base are pretty much not possible unless you are taking 1 hour lunches.

Yeah, there are a decent number of places to eat though. Main base has subway, and that's about it, but towards the resident housing there are more. Work day includes an hour lunch though. Core hours for engineers are 9:30 to 3:30 + 3 hours

you have a job offer in june-ish? where are you working on base?

Starting sometime early July. Propulsion testing at the AFFTC. Don't know the project yet though.

I had a great grandma that lived in Boron, which is pretty much next door to the base. There ain't crap to do for less than a 2-3 hour drive.

I've driven past it on my way to Mammoth Mountain...not much out there I'm afraid. Lancaster and Palmdale are probably the closest cities and that's not saying much.

Is it true that the streets on base are named after test pilots who augered in?

yea theres not much out there, but im not complaining. yea and the streats are named after pilots. wolfe, jaeger, and some others.
