I haven't played it in uhh 2 plus decades and it technically wasn't a board game. But I had this board'ish game where you stick your hand thru this bracelet like thingy that looked like 2 snakes, there was a casket with holes in it. You put these Ankas into the holes 1 at a time and one of the holes would randomly make the casket open and a skeleton pop up and the snake bracelet thingy jumped up and wrapped around your wrist. Was pretty intense when I was 9, I'm sure it would suck today but maybe I'll try and track it down for old times sakes.

Anyone remember this??

This one. There is another game, one with a tower. I've never played that one. This one rocks.

Escape From Colditz
Axis and Allies
Supremacy

Be a man, go straight into wargames.

On the lighter fair, the lord of the rings one is a bit of fun.

Agricola and Carcassone are good. Agricola takes a while to get the hang of, but its addicting. I also purchased Axis and Allies and Settlers last year, but have yet to play them.

Defective Yeti has an excellent resource on this. Personally I recommend:

Settlers of Catan (which you already tried)
Carcassonne
Ticket to Ride
Apples to Apples
Ra
San Juan

For something a bit more elaborate, I also enjoy Pandemic, which is rather different than most games because all the players are cooperating against the game.

I love me some Settlers of Catan.

Carcassonne also gets a nod and of course Axis & Allies and Risk are great fun.

However one offbeat game which is now hard to find (but great fun) is "Betrayal at the House on the Hill". All the players explore a randomized mansion (by pulling tiles from basement/upper/middle stacks to expand the house) while powering up until enough omens are revealed that one person randomly becomes a traitor and each side has different objectives (i.e. escape the house, kill the traitor, undo the curse by finding 3 items etc.). Unfortunately, there are only 50 or so scenarios so you will exhaust the game after awhile (it only works well when you don't know the oppositions' objectives).

Yes.

If you want the best resource for board games, go to www.boardgamegeek.com

Here is my current collection (though I still need to add a couple actually).

http://www.boardgamegeek.com/collection/user/datalink7

By the way, if you like board games but what you have played consists of Monopoly, Risk, Life, etc., you really need to go and play something else. Monopoly is rated at about a 4.4/10. So if you like that game, you'll LOVE some of the games they have out there.

This is me:

The wife and I have been playing Stratego lately. Back in the day, I played a lot of Risk; just about every weekend for a while.

Another vote for Settlers of Catan + expansions.

Battlestar Galactiga is also fun, if a bit long. (Also helps to have at least 4, preferably 5 or 6 people playing.)

Wow a lot of suggestions, cool. I will have to find a shop that has these.

Ticket to Ride sounds awesome, but I might be biased because I love the song .

I remember playing a flash game that seemed similar to Pandemic, but you played as the virus and the goal was to kill all people on earth. You had to choose traits like airborne versus waterborne infection, drug resistant versus quick spreading, etc.

Be a man, go straight into wargames.

On the lighter fair, the lord of the rings one is a bit of fun.

So what hardcore wargames are good? Honestly I like games that you have to totally annihilate your opponents, like monopoly and risk , although it's probably not the best way to get non-gamers into it.

Despite winning or placing second more often than not, I HATE Settlers of Catan. It is a dice rolling contest.

I am always down for a good game of Acquire or Risk 2210 or Axis and Allies. I thoroughly enjoy Monopoly where you must make deals to survive...

For co-operative games (which is fun when your group is mostly cut throat) Pandemic and Betrayal at House on the Hill are quite enjoyable.

Uhhhh. Don't get me wrong, I love A&A, but it is at least 75% dice rolling 15% strategy and 10% having good people on your side.

Memoir '44 is another WWII that I think is better than A&A because it is quicker, is much more strategic/dynamic. It is technically only 2 players though.

Puerto Rico is a nice simple game that involves no dice whatsoever, so is almost all strategy.

Battletech

Been teaching my 8 year old son how to play and he loves it.

I still have all my Battletech stuff, including the first tech manual that they had to republish after FASA lost the copyright to certain mechs (ie: Maurader). I even got all of the 1st run of Battletech Dark Ages clix, which is fun. Haven't really found anyone interested in playing classic Battletech after I moved, let along the clix where you have to collect the figures to play. I'm also on a kick to try to get a group for Heavy Gear (tabletop or PnP RPG) and Jupiter Chronicles.

Thanks to this thread, I just picked up Settlers, Dominion, and Carsacann. The girlfriend likes Civilization, and aside from Mario and Rock Band that's all the video games she likes, so I figured those three would be a good starting point for non-traditional board games. I tried one game of Khet with her, and she swore that one off My friend wouldn't even come near it. I also picked up Arkam Horror for a cooperative Lovecraftian twist. I played way too many games of Monopoly, Life, Sorry, and Trouble as a kid, so I'm looking for something with a bit more umph.

You are rolling a crap ton of dice compared to Settlers. It should balance out much better. I only play the Anniversary Edition now which I feel is probably the best balance of the game. The new combined Europe/Pacific reminds me of classic AH over-thinking.

Memoir '44 is another WWII that I think is better than A&A because it is quicker, is much more strategic/dynamic. It is technically only 2 players though.
I prefer the original Battle Cry to Memoir '44.

I mentioned this in the other thread, if you really want 100% strategy play Diplomacy. Just remember this key phrase: What happens in Diplomacy stays in Diplomacy. Otherwise you could really piss off some friends.

I think the recommendations in this thread are way way off base. Just the lightest, most luck based games have been recommended.

Some good games to try for those looking to get into boardgames and want low luck and high interaction are:

Euros with no luck that work with 2-3:
Caylus
Louis XIV
Mykerinos

Games with low no, high interaction, for 3-4:
Chicago Express(1 hour game)
Power Grid(2-3 hours)

Intense 2 player game with a bit of luck, but a lot of strategy:
Twilight Struggle(2-3 hours)

Best abstract games:
Dvonn
Yinsh

You've played Catan...

Agricola is still our #1.
Dominion is a close #2.

Galaxy Trucker is fun, but requires some quick thinking (its timed)
San Juan is a great card game.
At the gates of Loyang is a lighter game like agricola.
Munchkin Quest is a D&D spoof - very competitive card game but also funny.
Puerto Rico is the top rated game on BGG.com, but is also very deep in strategy - not for newcomers.

Anyone know how Settlers, Risk 2210, and Axis and Allies are with only two people?
