If anyone is interested in trying out some board games to see if this is something they'd like to do, here are a couple of easy to learn but very fun to play ones:

Carcassonne http://www.boardgamegeek.com/boardgame/822/carcassonne
The Settlers of Catan http://www.boardgamegeek.com/boardgame/13/the-settlers-of-catan

Carcassonne is a great place to start because you can find it pretty cheap (less than $20), the rules are simple, and the games are quick to play.

Carcassonne ftmfw. Games < 1 hour and it's a combo between Risk (without the stupid luck of die rolls) and Sim City. If you want longer games, just buy xpacs (8 of em). I like Settlers of Catan as well but it takes too dam long to play and Carcassonne is better with 2 people and faster.

Anyone know how Settlers, Risk 2210, and Axis and Allies are with only two people?

A&A is probably the best as one side plays all of the Axis powers and the other plays the Allies.

For strictly 2 player games I recommend Stratego, Battle Cry/Memoir '44, 1960 Making of the President, Twilight Struggle... games that are made for exactly 2 players.

You've played Catan...

Agricola is still our #1.
Dominion is a close #2.
The problem we have with Agricola (and other long games) is that the person who is clearly losing must continue to clearly lose for multiple hours. Even if my strategy in Dominion is horrible I know my pain will only last 30 more minutes.
Galaxy Trucker is fun, but requires some quick thinking (its timed)
We made a house rule where Small Asteroids can damage your intact hull not just open connectors. Makes the game so much more chaotic. Several times my ship was reduced to a hulk running on 1 engine.

I tried:
- Battlelore (nice tactic wargame 1vs1 game. Best played with the epic rules which add magic, creatures, etc to your army)
- Arkham Horror (extremely awesome but steep learning curve. Best played at 3, 4 or 5)
- Smallworld (lots of fun from 2 to 5 players)
- Munchkin and Munchkin Cthulhu (fun and simple card game)
- Thunderstone (card game, really cool)
- Jaipur (quick and simple card game)
- Tannhäuser (a troop based combat game. Only played once now but it's really fun. A WW2 theme with altered reality)

Gonna buy 1 or more of those soon:
- Chaos in the Old World
- AD&D Castle Ravenloft
- Dungeonquest
- Dungeon Lords
- Agricola
- Catan

I got ticket to ride which is a great first game to get. It's dead simple, fun, and takes less than an hour to finish. Now I feel like I can get something a little more challenging and my gf and friends will trust me enough to get them into that

I've been playing Kingsburg with friends. I'm terrible at it. From a card standpoint we play Munchkin, too, which I like a lot.

Another game that is fun that I haven't seen mentioned yet is called Bang! . It's a card game where you have a sheriff/deputy/robbers and you try to kill the other team. Fun game.

Another really fun card game is called Court the King. It's a dice rolling contest but there is strategy thrown in and it's way fun.

Then of course the obvious Settlers series, Carcasonne, Ticket to Ride. Thinkgeek has a really fun zombie game. Risk 2210 is really fun.

I'm going to have to check out some of the games mentioned here.

Bang is a party game... you really need 6-8 people to really play it well.

I've played a few games of that. We've done all three version, the starter single age version, the intermediate two age version, and the full on three age game. We found that the intermediate game ends up a closer game while adding the third age someone gets so far ahead there was no way to catch up. It was fun, but it's not the kind of game we'd pull out routinely.

Me and some friends played a new game a few weeks ago called Fresco that was absolutely fantastic, especially with the expansion. Buying and mixing paint doesn't sound like much of a them for a board game, but it was incredibly fun.

Through the Ages is one of my favorite games. A lot of fun, particularly if you are into the civilization theme.

I just bought Civilization, The Board Game which is a new release. Same theme but it isn't abstract like Through the Ages. You actually move bits around and explore territory. Not sure if it will be better though (TTA is pretty stellar).

Carcassone is an awesome game. We have the hunters & gatherers set, or whatever it's called.

Scrabble is a freaking fantastic game, tbh.

Anyone played powergrid? I'm thinking of getting that or maybe Pandemic, whichever is easier/ more accessible.

Ticket to Ride is great, but a little too simple, maybe I'll get the Europe version.

the Europe version is far superior IMO.

Pandemic is a co-op game, Powergrid is Vs each other. Both are fun. I think pandemic is the easier of the two.

Look into Kill Dr. Lucky. Its a ton o fun.

Pandemic is a lot of fun, I need to get the expansion. Both versions of Ticket to Ride are fun, but the original has some balance issues (depends too much on the luck of drawn routes). TTR: Europe fixed up those problems and is definitely more balanced. I haven't tried Marklin or any of the others.
