I bought a Adaptec ASC-19160-WB (controller + cables & termination) with a Seagate ST39205LW (9.2GB Seagate Cheetah 36XL) scsi cause i've never tried scsi (I guess).

I was trying to find a good web site for instructions about same, the floppie (that came with it) has drivers for everything except w2k, so thats a problem....i guess. One of the confusing things are all the D** jumper settings, I'm use to the IDE drives jumpers but have never seen all this.

Anyway, anyone know of a good web site with step by step instructions on the scsi stuff. I think I may have made a mistake buying this stuff.:-(

Thank you

I can't think of a good site offhand but, I can answer your questions:

Windows 2K has drivers for that adapter built-in but you can download updated ones from Adaptec's website.

The only jumper settings you have to set are for the SCSI ID. It is probably at the default of ID 0 which is what you want. With IDE you have Master/Slave since you can only have 2 devices per channel. With SCSI you can have 7 (15 one some controllers) so each device is assigned its own ID.

The only other setting that may be of interest is something called Motor Start Enable (or similar). This tells the drive not to power up until the controller polls it. This is to lessen the power surge when you turn the system on if you have a bunch of drives. Disabling this will speed you boot by 5-10 seconds per device and if you don't have a bunch of drives, shouldn't be a problem to turn this off.

The card bios (at bootup) see it at 160 (means something i guess) and HD 0. (NOW), the little manual said it's preset to scsi id7 and should not be changed. (Confusing) "More", Then it said, if your computer will boot from a scsi hard disc, make sure the scsi id of the hard disk is set to "0".....Dah!!! My mobo is a new abit BE6-II and has tons for features.
The HD hasn't got any jumpers on it at all at this time but they did send some in a little bag??

A little history:
My present system has (1) 30gig ide with 4 partitions running c: (w98se) and d: (w2k) and want this cheetah as my main C: with w2k on it. What would anyone recommend as a scenario???

Right now I have removed the power/plug and cable to this IDE HD and trying to get the cheetah running properly....and have got w2k installed as C: (4gig) and te rest of it is D: with nothing on it.

(I would like to note that the D** cheetah thing sure seem's Slow...??? Any ideas here would be helpfull.)

Please Help!

Regards
Lassie

Since you have the drive up and running but think its 'slow' benchmark it and see how it compares to the IDE drive in your system. If it is indeed slower than your IDE drive there could a problem with your setup. You may have to read the manual to fine tune jumper/scsi bios settings, I have drives with over a dozen jumpers.

As far as your scsi bios info 160 is the class of drive and should be as fast as any IDE drive.
0 id for boot drive is right.
7 id for the adaptor is right.
All devices on your scsi chain need an id, that includes the adaptor and 7 is best for it.

<< Does it make any difference which PCI slot the adaptec card goes into ?? >>

try to use a slot that isn't sharing its irq with another & try to have the scsi card with an irq all to itself(+ pci steering). not essential but ideal!

Ok...good idea. (More Please).

Can I use my regular IDE controller's in any config?? Like i have my old IDE HD ready to attach back up to IDE (1) as master (and it use to be my C: drive) and I now have this scuzzy as C: off of the card??

In other words, whats going to happen when I throw that into the mix cause it had/has (before I pulled the cable off) w98se on C: and w2k on D: running perfectly and both on primary partitions...???

Do I need to use partition magic to de-activate the old drive?? or what?

I just noticed that I didn't install the LVD cable properly (Maybe)?

I have it attached ok to the mobo BUT I attached the HD to the 3rd connector from the end and just read that it should be attached at the end of the cable closest to the terminated end.

Is this right or even important ??

Thanks Again

You should ALWAYS connect a scsi device to the last connector on the cable.
If your harddrive is not a LVD you should look at a jumper that says TERMINATION and the termination should be OFF because the LVD cable has termination enabled.
You should also configure the bios off the Adaptec controller (enabling boot ID)etc.
You can find alot off info on the Adaptec site. Your Controller should work in EVERY windows-version with standard SCSI-drivers but if you want the performance you should replace these universal drivers with the proper ones.

Your SCSI HD (if LVD) must be so fast that your IDE-devices stop rottation because of Shame

Yep, it's LVD cheetah and I thought it was acting slow but I guess it's because I had it installed on the 3rd connector from the end...i'll be changing it and see if the performance get's better. I'll also check out the adaptec site and install the drivers if ness.

Thanks
