I've been looking especially at the KRKs, but now I'm a bit curious.

They have two lines, the RP line and V line (more expensive). What would be better - getting the RP-8s for $250 (bigger but lower quality than V line) or the V6 (smaller but higher quality)?

What's the advantage of size - more power?

The bigger ones have a wider frequency response, the bigger woofer the lower the frequency that can be produced. In terms of power, as an amateur hobbyist I'd say it doesn't really matter, they'll all go very loud. Even my little RP-5s can provide a room-filling sound.

The V6 or RP-8 question I'm not entirely sure about. Whilst the V6s are most likely going to be more accurate, level monitors, I can say that the RPs are already excellent quality. Plus, regardless of how good the V6s are, the RP-8s are going to produce lower lows which could make more of a difference for playing the piano.

The above said, I'm not an expert, and others on here can probably tell you more. But I'd lean toward the RP-8s.

Larger drivers can and will have significantly different acoustic characteristics, sometimes for the better and sometimes for the worse.

On rare occasion you can find waterfall/step response, harmonic distortion and frequency response measurements for speakers.

It is rare however, sometimes speaker reviewers do something similar, but again, rare. Excellent information if you can find it, it would without a doubt give you a very objective comparison.

The far distant next best thing would be to just compare reviews. Soundonsound is one of the more popular professional gear reviewers.

Okay, here's another question from someone clueless. I live in a small apartment and don't want boomy noise to bother my neighbors. Would, say, the 8" KRK RPs have a "boomier" sound than the 6" woofers?

They go deeper, doesn't mean they're 'boomier', but I suppose that depends on what you definition of boomy is. But yes, your neighbors would certainly hear more with the 8" model. A substantial amount of this problem can be overcome with good positioning and equalization, it will make them sound better too.

They're not exactly intended as monitoring speakers, but I've heard positive things about them, it could be a good choice.

I cant remember what model of Yamaha monitors we've got on it. They're active and flat response, though.
