Anyone know max memory speed Kaveri will officially support?

Howdy All!

So, I have an ebay coupon that expires Jan 5th and I'm wanting to buy some RAM for an AMD Kaveri build. The chip apparently has graphics as good as a 7750 (amazing for integrated graphics imo), but DDR3 RAM is really going to kill performance. I figure I should get the fastest RAM that is supported. I don't want to go overkill (for example, why buy 2400 if the max supported is 2133, etc).

I would normally just wait for the chip to be released, but I can save a bit of money if I order by the 5th.

Any ideas?

The CAS rating is probably the bigger deal. I've seen a few reviews now where 2133 c9 memory performs just a hair under 2400 c10. Here's an Anand article comparing these. The 2400 came out just a fraction better, but in that review it was deemed that the extra expense didn't justify the fractional gains. In a couple of cases the 2133 actually came out ahead...

A couple of other articles (trying to find something recent)

If you could find some 2400 c9, or other memory that could be 'overclocked' to that speed, that could be cool, but of course the big question is could the APU handle that timing?

The 'shorthand form' for comparing timings is to take the frequency and divide by the cas. So 2133c9 comes out to 237 while 2400c10 comes out to 240. Essentially maybe a 1.26% increase for the 2400.

The other timings will come into play as well, of course, so really, checking real world benchmarks is the better way to go. But most benchmarks I've seens seem to hit that rough average I mentioned above. At the end of the day, it all comes down to if you can get a sweet deal on 2400 low timing memory, or if money isn't that big of a factor.

As for 'official' support, I'm not seeing anything 'official' via Google. And that is the more important question (do I risk going the 2400 route, or play it safe?) Maybe someone else here may have seen something?

I must say it really sucks that your coupon runs out a day before AMD's press conferrence at CES. We might get some 'official numbers' out of that press conference, but that will be a day late for you...

DaZeeMan speaks truth.

Get G.Skill TridentX DDR3-2400. I got those from NewEgg during blackfriday for dirt cheap.

Here's a review of a Richland 6800K running 2400MHz DDR3 at c11.
http://benchmarkreviews.com/3653/adata-xpg-v2-ram-ddr3-2400-8gb-memory-kit-review/

The Toms review linked above noted that some ram brands were unstable at 2400 MHz on the AMD platform. With the other two brands in the shootout, one managed C9 at 2400 MHz at 1.65v.
http://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/bulldozer-ddr3-overclocking,3209-8.html

So with Richland at least, 2400 MHz may be a hit or miss affair. I would hope that Kaveri can do AT LEAST as well as Richland on the memory front, so depending on the brand you would probably do OK with 2400 MHz. I'd be curious if the c9 2400 mentioned in the post above has been used with a Richland at C9...

Hmm, perhaps I should just let my coupon expire. These prices are not making me very optimistic. I see that during Black Friday, some of these prices were 40% lower!

I didn't check the price on ebay but yeah I got about 40% on those sticks.

Better to get your ebay coupons on something else such as a keyboard, mice or something cheap to ship.

It shouldn't have a problem with 2400 ram. If you get a mobo with only 2 dimm slots it will have a higher official supported speed.

most likely 2133 and stable 2400 may depend on the motherboard...

This.

Trinity "officially" supported DDR3-1866 speeds.

Richland bumped this up to DDR3-2133 "officially".

Hopefully Kaveri will push this even further to DDR3-2400 we'll have to wait and see.
