My wife and I have been having smoothies more and more lately and while they're great and better than something like ice cream or shakes, they're really expensive to buy.

Does anyone know of a Smoothie blender that's really good but cheap/affordable also?

Bed Bath & Beyond. Look for sales.
Also, they send out 20% off coupons all the time. My mom has a huge stack of them.

My family has had their run of the mill of cheap blenders. But if you're serious about smoothies, I suggest that you don't skimp out on the hardware. Both Blendtec and Vitamix make excellent blenders, and well worth the money if you're making a lot of smoothies. Of course, they can do much more than smoothies.

I bought a $29 Hamilton Beach blender at Fry's a while back and put it into service making blended margaritas. It's still working just fine.

I have to say - this is absolutely true. My wife and I got into breakfast smoothies when we first got married as an easy & healthy breakfast (2 scoops vanilla protein powder, banana, frozen berries, yogurt, rice milk) and we went through no less than 3 blenders - first one's blade disintegrated, second one started smoking, and third one just quit. The Blendtec I've had for years, not one problem. Zilch. Pulverizes anything we put in it, including a full bucket of ice. It's the real deal.

You will never have to buy another blender again if you invest in a Blendtec.

Same eventually I want to buy one. They are pricy, but probably worth it. And just the fact of owning one would be cool. Only problem is I'd be tempted to put stuff in there that is on the "do not try at home" list. Then it would not be healthy to use it for food after that. LOL

I agree, blendtec's are amazing! But the nutri bullet is a great option if you're just making smoothies, and it's waaaay cheaper. Good luck!

I purchased a Ninja NJ600 a few months ago at Bed Bath and Beyond. It was $99.00 and I used a 20% off coupon. I've been using it twice a day since and love it.

It's huge and quite loud, but it's also easy to clean and has plenty of power.
The pitcher locks onto the base and has a nice solid feel to it.
The cover also has a handle that locks it into place while blending, and has a plastic pour spout so you don't have to take it off until you're ready to clean.

I had a kitchenaid previously and it was a PITA to clean and wasn't nearly as powerful.

I generally make a shake with ice, protein powder, banana, peanut butter, water, and occasionally throw some spinach and/or frozen berries in. So far it's blended everything consistently with no chunks.

Can't say I love the name/branding, but it seems like a good machine.
