Yeah comics were the stuff back then. I wish I had kept all of mine in excellent condition. I wish it was still popular.

The comics back then sure don't look anything like the new comics.

CGC (Comics Guaranty Company) is an independent entity made up of professionals in the industry that provide a service where they grade the condition of comic books. They assess and come up with a grade for a book, and then put it into a hard plastic display slab with grade displayed up top. Grades are:
0.5 (Poor)
1.0
1.8
2.0
2.5
(.5 increments up through 9.0)
9.2 (Near Mint -)
9.4 (Near Mint)
9.6 (Near Mint +)
9.8 (Near Mint/Mint)
9.9 (Mint)
10.0 (Gem Mint)
Anyway... CGC grading has become the HUGE rage in the industry for collectors. Before CGC came along, there was always mass controversy as to the proper way to grade a book. People would never agree on condition and it's value.
Books with a high grades (9.9's and 10.0's are super-rare) tend to sell for multiple times of the amount listed in the typical price guides (like Wizard) because CGC takes away any doubt about the true condition of the book.
I dunno, it's a huge thing that probably will never apply to you since it sounds like you're just in it for the pleasure of reading the books (and you should be!).
Just do a search on eBay for "CGC" and you'll return thousands of hits.

I collect for pleasure as hopefully profit...but i notice that alot of my rare books are going for very low prices...and i am not sure if its because they lost value int he wizard guide or because they arent graded.
how much does the grading cost?
i have the first appearance of venom and carnage, as well as gambit. the original gen 13 series just to name a few but in the guide they arent worth much over cover price.

The grading costs vary... but for "modern" books (1975-current), it's about $14/book.
Sounds like your rare books are from the 90's... which is the glut of comic history. Tons of books were made... because reading/collecting peaked in the mid-90's. Grading books from the late 80's-90's are typically not worth it with the exception of a couple of books, or unless you're absolutely sure your book will come back with a 9.6 or higher grade. And believe me, the grading is quite strict.
First appearance of Gambit (Uncanny X-Men #266) is worth a solid $30 in near-mint condition.
Gen 13 is basically dead.
Spider-man is hot, and will probably always be hot.

It's really hit-or-miss with that. Certain, random comics will be worth a ton. Most are worth a couple of bucks. How old are your comics? (1960's? 1990's?) Can you give me an example of what titles and issue numbers you have?
And no, I don't know of any good online sites for that. Wizard's online site is subscription-based.
