The classifieds in your local newspaper. Check them every week. Some weeks may have nothing, but eventually there will be some good jobs.

In my opinion, Monster.com sucks. So does going to a headhunter. This is just from my experience (I'm in Western New York), so you may still want to give those a shot. The only thing better than the classifieds is if someone you know tells you about an opening. If you are recently graduated, does your school offer any career help? What part of the country are you in? What kind of work do you want to do? Do you have any preference working for a large company or a small company?

You can ignore the next paragraph if you want, its just my job history.

I got my first job through a family connection. After two years, I got my next job through a headhunter. Between him and the company they really nickeled and dimed me. They made me start as a contractor, then after three months go to full time. Of course the salary I was promised was retracted and I had to take 5 or 10 percent less money, and take 10 percent of it as a signing bonus. However, I got the last laugh, because 2 weeks after I started full time, a job I applied for after seeing an ad in the paper hired me for a lot more money. This meant the headhunter lost his fee. Also, they never asked for the signing bonus back. The next job didn't ask for the signing bonus back either. Now I work for myself out of my house.

HI:
If you are willing to relocate I would try the Union Pacific Railroad they are always looking for computer people. They pay extremely good, fantistic fringe benifits and they have all the latest stuff. They have there own fibre optics line all the way from Lousiiana to Omaha ne to california to texas and to washington state. Probably about 5,000 or more computers all connected to a big machine in Omaha Ne. Look at there web site. A super place to work.

Electronic Technician (Commerce, CA) - Telecommunications - Anticipated Openings! - Union Pacific Railroad
Lineperson 3rd Class (Installation Technician) (Nampa, ID) - Communications - Union Pacific Railroad

Those are all the listings for UP. Oh jee, lemme quit my desk job paying nearly 50% more to do this...Ya, they surely do need computer people huh. Maybe you could link us to where these IT jobs are, cause I aint findin nothing to make me wanna work for them.

Check with your school, they should keep listings of local companies hiring.

BuckleDownBen - Ha, I noticed you are from Western New York. I am in the same boat here, and boy am I loving this weather. Anyway, I'm curious as to the positions you have found locally. I am a graduate with a BA from UB, currently taking tech classes, and stuck in a dead end job where I do everything from sales, to network admining, to computer repair, to blueprint reading and estimating. Basically I'm the utility man as I would figure it.

Anyway, I'm debating about going back for my MBA in MIS, and wonder what locals might think regarding the job prospects in the future for this area? Since you are already employed in the area, and I would assume have decent contacts, your opinion would be greatly appreciated. Thanks a ton.
