To wrap up this thread, at least for now - - I found what I wanted even though it was a bit diff than the thread subject.
I went with this adaptor
http://www.directron.com/fanadapter.html
It is about the best looking one I've found. I might have gone for one of the aluminum type if I had a different HSF, but if you check out the pics of the Volcano 6Cu+ at newegg, you can see that it is peculiar in that the fan doesnt mount directly to the HS> There is a black plastic plate with a 60mm hole in it, and the fan mounts to that.
In addition, after reading a couple net reviews that said A-OK, I bought three of the (relatively) new Enermax 80mm "blue" fans which have the manual speed control. At top speed this fan makes 40cfm and 33db. That's a good bit quieter than the 39db coming from the stock 60mm that came with the Volcano Cu6+ (That's if Tt's rating is actually correct - it's really loud).
I figure I can run one of these fans on "high" on the CPU, one as intake at the front of the case on "low" or "mid", and one at the back of the case as exhaust on "mid" or "high" depending on loudness. Depending on temps, I may be able to drop those settings a notch.
Thanks to whoever it was who gave me the dryer sheet idea for an intake filter!
I know there's mixed reviews on the 60 to 80 adaptors, and looking around part of that might be because there are some really crappy designs. Most arent even "airtight" if you know what I mean. Take a look at Akasa's plastic one at Newegg for example (under CPU accessories). But, I think the biggest problem is high expectations. Using a 60 to 80 adaptor is likely to DROP overall cooling performance, not boost it. You aren't going to get BETTER cooling using an adaptor unless you get one of those hi-speed Delta 80mm's that make 55cfm and as many db's.
All I was after was nearly the same cooling (+/- 2 degrees or so) but a substantial drop in noise. Once its all in, I plan to post a short review, either admitting my foolishness or my success.
Wish me luck.
