We got hit by lightning and what you are seeing here is our Alarm System mainboard that got affected. I am hoping that the chip shown is not damaged.

The plan is to remove it and put it into a replacement board. That would save me from reprogramming headaches.

I don't want to damage the chip. So whats the best way to remove this chip without purchasing some specialized chip puller.

thanks !!

As someone who's worked with such things for many years, my sole recommendation is the tool specially designed for the job.

In a pinch I've used a paper clip. Take some needle nose pliers and bend both ends of the clip into an L shape. Now I have a chip puller to perform the task.

Pour melted chocolate onto the back of the chip. Stick a pencil in the chocolate. Put the whole thing in the freezer. When the chocolate hardens, remove the chip by pulling on the pencil.

Why do you want to take that chip out?

It is not likely fried from the lightning hit.

Nevermind, just saw you are getting a replacement board and it most likely does not contain a pre-programmed chip.

stick a small screwdriver or toothpick in the upper right & upper left corners and pry each side out slowly. you'd have to be a total klutz to break the chip.

are you even sure that's where the programmed info is stored? it might be on some non removable surface mount eeprom.

This, just use a toothpick.
