Anyone know what happens if you don't pay an out of the country parking ticket?

I drove my car to Toronto and got a $60 parking ticket. I'm back in the US and will probably never be in Canada again or for a really long time. By then, I probably will not have my current car. What happens if you don't pay an out of the country parking ticket? I'm googling and reading up on it but just wanted to see if anyone had experience.

Since they are completely different jurisdictions with completely different laws, I do not see how they can do anything about it - Unless of course you return to Canada.

I have no idea though, so maybe someone else can chime in.

Homeland security forwards the paperwork to your State of residence and your license is suspended. Not that things don't fall through the cracks but, I wouldn't count on it.

With this being Canada, it is possible that provinces have reciprocal agreements with some states and as a result, it could go on your record. That would be something the OP needs to look into but IMO, he should just pay it.

Otherwise, barring a reciprocal agreement like I mentioned, the only thing a foreign country can really do is send the ticket to the rental car agency if you rented the car and the rental car company will charge you. I rented a car in Germany a couple of years ago and researched this quite a bit - the Homeland Security department is not involved at all unless here has been a big (and very recent) change and frankly, I call BS on that claim because it wouldn't be their responsibility in any way, shape, or form.

Not too long ago nothing would happen. Not sure about these days though. On local Toll Bridges it doesn't matter where you're from or whether you will stopped to pay the Toll, you will be Billed and receive it at your residence. Not sure what the consequences of ignoring that would be, but a few decades ago they wouldn't know who you were or where you lived, even if they had a License plate number(they could find out if they really wanted to, but the effort and cost wasn't worth it). These days they do know and that makes ignoring such things at least potentially annoying.

Most likely nothing unless you return to the country. My uncle got a $600 dollar ticket driving in Spain in a rented car which he ignored. Has been several years and no word.

Canada will bill the United States. The United States will refuse to pay. Canada will invade and lay claim to $60 worth of U.S. territory (pretty much all of North Dakota east of the Missouri River). In a couple months, they'll quietly give it back when Canadian reconnaissance teams report that what they seized is even duller than Saskatchewan.

lol unless something has changed Virginia doesn't do anything to you for not paying a DC parking ticket so I can't imagine them suspending your Virginia drivers license for an unpaid Toronto parking ticket.

You will be sentenced to one year of driving with your media player locked to Justin Bieber. Turning it off at any point extends the sentence.

Hell, during my roadtrip, stupid me got a $250 speeding ticket in Tombstone, AZ 7 years ago. It's a true bumfack nowhere in AZ, 10 miles north of Mexican border.

I ended up just ignoring the ticket. Nothing EVER happened from it- got a clean record today in both Mass & NJ/NY. It's a population of 1,300. I bet they literally have a shack for a DMV office.

Speeding tickets and parking tickets will likely go no where. I could only find this site talking about Reciprocal agreements between Ontario and the US states. In theses agreements the call out specific crimes that will be passed between the two organizations. Parking tickets or speeding are not on the lists.

That said, for $60 I would just pay it. You never know if you end up with a job that has you fly into Canada and then you are screwed with a $500 bill due to interest and fees.

You're misreading the part on crimes a bit. That was an addition to standing agreements and was between provinces and territories only. It also does include unpaid fines. You can search AAMVA reciprocal agreements as well. It will link to a PDF. Can't bring it up at work.
