Hmm 5200rpm drives just came out for laptops so I wouldnt expect 7200 for quite some time.

When they can get them to run as cool as a 5400rpm laptop or a way to cool them. Since I think the extra heat would be the main problem.

IBM has already announced a 7200RPM line expected to be available this quarter.

I got a 5400RPM drive in a new IBM and was not that impressed. I couldn't tell any performance difference between it and the 4200RPM models I've used before - reason being, immediately after use, a laptop drive shuts down immediately (to save juice), and everytime you try to fetch something off the drive, it has to spin up again. So if you think about it, 4200RPM would actually be faster in this instance, since it takes less time to get to speed than a 5400RPM drive!

One difference I did notice is that the 5400RPM drive killed the battery much, much sooner. Took about an hour off the life of the notebook.............

I found the actual data transfer rate between a 20 GB 4200 HDD and a 20 GB 5400 drive to be really significant. I'm talking a DOS boot and runnning a drive copy of one complete drive to the other. The 4200 to 4200 drive copy operation averaged about 350 MB/Minute. The 4500 to 5400 drives do the exact same job at about 437 MB/Minute. That is actual - not a bench test.

In the desktop arena, I clone a pair of 80 GB Maxtors, and they average about 330 MB/Min. With two new IBM GXP180s (same size and RPM), that jumps to an astounding 1350 MB/Min. Again, these are actuals - not tests.

To run 7200 RPM in the 2.5-in format is going to require a lot of special cooling in laptops. And has been pointed out, faster RPM uses power - so if you are a battery person (I only use battery power in emergencies for short term) you will have a shorter run time. The additional cooling will also consume power.

Keep in mind what you will be using the laptop/HDD for.

If you will be constantly transferring files by network cable to other drives on a network, then your statistic is relevant and important. Please also keep in mind that you will likely be plugged in to a wall outlet at that time.

For most people who use laptops in a normal manner, they do some work, save it a while later, then repeat this process. For these folks and those on battery power, as well, 7200RPM (and likely 5400RPM) would be wasteful and counterproductive.
