10 mins from mooncancook

Close. Maybe around 15 min. Is it located on or near N. 1st street? The area is definitely not ghetto, big tech companies almost everywhere. There are 3 Fry's within 15-20 min. I'd choose to stay north of SJ airport though coz I don't like living close to downtown area.

I've lived in different parts of Santa Clara, Sunnyvale, Mountain View, and Campbell/San Jose border over the last 10 years. If I were you, I'd look into renting an apartment north of the airport. Parts of Santa Clara, Sunnyvale, and Mountain View all have single bedroom apartments under $1,500 a month. I recommend north of the airport because your commute will be between 10-20 minutes each way every day and you will be going opposite traffic. The main freeways in the area of your company are 87 and 101 and both have terrible northbound traffic in the morning and southbound traffic in the afternoon. So, whatever you do, don't rent a place in south San Jose - it may be slightly cheaper but you're going to spend a significant amount of time commuting. The reason I recommended Mountain View or Sunnyvale is because neither of them are super expensive and each has a nice town area with a couple of blocks of bars, restaurants, etc., so living close will allow you a short walk and is convenient.

As others have mentioned, downtown San Jose is dead on the weekends unless there is a Sharks game or it's Cinco de Mayo, so I wouldn't live down there. If you want any more help shoot me a pm.

Im soon to be living in Evergreen(the southeast corner of the city). I works well for us since my commute to Fremont/Pleasanton is against traffic and my wifes commute to Los Gatos is a quick jaunt on the freeway or surface streets. I wouldnt reccommend the Evergreen area to a young single person, as its mostly asian families paying stupid prices for access to the better schools.

yes, the asian parents in particular, will do anything to move into Cupertino once their kids are ready for elementary school, and work their ass off for the next 12 yrs until the kids go to college.

Back on topic... if you like bars and clubbing you'll have to ask someone else. If you like outdoors, Santa Cruz is really close, Lake Tahoe is a few hours away. Tahoe is also where we go skiing in winter. For beaches you can drive to Santa Cruz, Monterey, Carmel, all within about 2.5 hrs. San Francisco is an hour away. LA and Vegas for short vacations.

I grew up in Evergreen, totally agree. Unless you have kids, don't live there if you want fun. It sucked that anytime I wanted to go out, it's a minimum 10 minute drive to the frickin freeway.

But I really like my parent's house.

Oddly enough, I actually like the idea of living in Downtown SJ but I don't need much nightlife around me. I was going to recommend looking in SJ's Japantown, but no life there at night either.

If you want a good balance, I'd look in Sunnyvale or Mountain View. You can get a one bedroom for sure at that price, two bedrooms in that range will probably be older and much smaller, if you can find one.

I live in south San Jose; the commute isn't that bad if you can work slightly off hours (i.e. a 10-7 shift). Rent is cheaper (~1300 for a one bedroom apt) and there is some nightlife around here. I don't go clubbing, but the bar scene is pretty decent.

San Jose doesn't have much character, but jesus, to compare it to Detroit with weather? I would say Detroit has far more "character" than San Jose but nothing else...

San Jose use to be nice before the Tech Boom, now it's wall to wall people and traffic. Like others have said it has no character now. They tried to renovate the Down Town area but it's just tacky.

Now there are some nice towns around San Jose like Los Gatos, Saratoga and the Santa Cruz area but it's real expensive. About the only thing really going for it is great weather.

I have lived in San Jose, and still work there. I live near Santa Cruz in the mountains and commute. My rent is $1025 for a small house, and my commute is generally ~40 minutes. Traffic is usually a breeze on 17 except for when there is an accident or a tree falls in the highway.
