It's not my thing, but massive reward bonuses for a cancellable $69 fee, and you get to stick it to CHASE!!! This could be the seasons or years best deal. YMMV

quote from Slick deals:
Chase offers 50,000 Bonus Points with Southwest Airlines Plus Credit Card Approval after your first purchase. Points are redeemable for 2 Roundtrip Flights or $500 worth of Amazon gift cards. Thanks localdeals
Note, please read Pricing & Terms for more information. There is a $69 annual membership fee (not waived for first year), but you get 3,000 points when you renew your card, redeemable for a $50 Wanna Get Away Fare

Actually the card doesn't let one "stick it to Chase" but rather Southwest as they are the ones offering the rewards portion. Chase is just the institution extending the credit if you decide to buy anything. Still a good deal however. My roommate signed up for the Premier card vs the Plus as he actually flies on the airline frequently and its the better deal if you plan on using it.

I'm displeased with Southwest customer service and don't want to promote them, but it's a great deal, and IMO the two flights are worth more than the $500 card.

For all the people jumping on the bandwagon to use the flights and then cancel the card, you might want to know canceling any sort of credit card is pretty bad for your credit. You might want to weight whether or not getting 2 free flights is enough to make your credit score dip.

This is why I didn't jump on it, though I did want a free ipad 2 from the amazon gift.

Thanks for the heads-up. I was really considering this but it took me a long time to get my credit where it is and I'd hate for it to take a hit.

This is completely untrue. If you apply for the credit card, the only hit your credit will take is from the inquiry to the Credit Reporting Agency. Depending on what credit limit you receive, your credit score might improve because of a decreased utilization % of your total credit. After canceling the card, that would revert back to whatever it was before you received the card. You don't get penalized at all for canceling any credit.

This is somewhat incorrect. You'll takea FICO dip right away as the new account will lower your average age of accounts, but once you close it, it stays on your report for at least 10 years and continues to count towards AAoA until it falls off.

and if you own a house and don't plan on moving anytime soon...your credit score really doesn't mean sh1t anyways. Not that I expect everyone to own a house...

You must be very young because this is very, very naive.

And wrong.

...maybe I should have clarified?

If you own a house and a car and don't plan on starting a small business, then a short term account (such as this example) really doesn't matter to you how it affects your credit score.

How will going from 760 to 740 for a year affect your life given the situation above?

I'd say 99% of these cases it will have none at all.

I've always wondered how the US economy got where it is right now. Then I go into one of these threads and got my answer.

Very small hit on your credit score especially since you won't have it that long. You want to keep the cards that you have had for a long time. If you already have a good credit score and are not planning to purchase a new car or house right away then this is no big deal. BTW I've had this card for years and have earned numerous free flights. This is actually worth keeping.

I couldn't find anything about redeeming the points for a $500 Amazon gift card. Can anyone confirm if the offer is legit? Might be nice coming into the holiday season...

I signed up for this, got the $99 account because I fly southwest. Also, free bags when you fly is cool. Concerning your credit report, employers/landlords/you name it check your credit.
Edit: First post by the way. Hurray me.

Will I take a hit???

Purchased 2 cars outright in the last 3 years. Solo income is ~30% of our home mortgage, joint income is 65% of our mortgage. 10k of 15K total CC limit is free with both cards under 40%.

But we would like to move to a bigger place in the next year or 2.... What do you think???
