Getting ready to upgrade to Dual core and would like to know what OC people are getting with the X2 3800+ using the stock retail HSF and thermal pad. Please post your Max stable OC's (12 hour prime stable or longer) with Idle and Load temps. I am hoping I could reach 2.5G OC with Load temps under 55*C with the retail HSF.

Also can someone verify that the X2 3800+ retail does not come with the Copper Heat Pipe HSF like the X2 42/44/46/4800 and FX series CPU's come with. I think the X2 3800+ comes with the HSF like the Venice/Sandiego single core CPU's ship with ( ie... the same HSF that came with my retail Winchester 3000+)

Thanks in advance for any responces!!!

if you are going to o/c, the obvious choice is the otperon 165 over a x2 3800 any day...and i think it comes with the better hsf, but you may want to confirm this

I'm using the stock X2 3800+ cooler (except I removed the TIM and used Artic Silver). I'm not pushing it very hard, 2.4 @ 1.4125 core voltage. Idles in the high 30's to low 40's (C). Running Prime 95 torture test it maxed at 55C.

YMMV, the case and it's ventilation, other components can influence temps greatly.

Thanks for the replies so far guys, keep them coming .

I realize the 165 Opteron is considered the best bang for the buck of the Dual core OCers, but unfortunetely my Abit AV8 mobo can't go above 267HTT and keep the AGP lock stable, so for this reason i want go with a 10x multi CPU this time (currently have 9x 3000+ winnie). Don't want to upgrade mobo at this time because my AGP GPU 6800 OCed (375/750) and softmoded (16p/6vs) does just fine with the only game i play regulary which is Aces High II (great online WWII Combat Flight sim).

even with a 9x266 you would still be @ 2.4GHz/core.... or the opteron 170

Saechaka,

Are you saying you got the copper heat pipe HSF with your retail X2 3800+, I was under the impression that that AMD HSF only came with the X2 42/44/46/4800, FX, and opteron CPU's.

That is true, but with the 10x Multi of the X2 3800+ i would have a shot at 2.67G with my current mobo if i could keep the temps resonable. Oppty 170 is $100 more then X2 3800+
