the fact that they have someone like kate upton advertising for these things is all the reason I need to stay away.

Until these types of games go away, mobile gaming will forever be held back. I don't see it changing unfortunately, casual gamers seem to love this type of freemium time grinding stuff.

Been playing for a few months and really enjoy it, even my wife is playing it as well. If you like it take a look at Plunder Pirates as well.

Agree 100%. Hard to believe that it was only a couple years ago that various pundits were claiming mobile gaming would take over from the set top console and PC so much that they'd make the 8th gen console the final generation. And then all we got was a slew of microtransaction laden, lazily developed cash grabs that forever cemented the reputation of the mobile platform.

IM confused what kate upton has to do with clash of clans? lol I havent seen her advertise on it at all!

This. I've seen her on a game commercial a few times, but I'm pretty sure she's advertising a different game (I don't play either).

Like I said, what do you propose is a good solution?

Clash of Clans is actually well made. So is Boom Beach. Supercell is raking in quite a bit of money each day, and while I thought these games were retarded from a 10,000 ft view, after I tried them, I have to admit they're pretty well made.

Agreed that not all freemium games are created equal. There's definitely a lot of trash out there, but there's a reason CoC is a top 10 game.

I advise some of you to try before you just grab your pitchforks over freemium. Not only that, you don't even need to spend money to be competitive.

Edit: Clash of Clans has older graphics as its an older game, but the gameplay is pretty solid. TBH the graphics turned me off at first, but Boom Beach is much newer (2014). I find that the gameplay is solid too and the graphics are pretty cute.

How about making a real game for a fair price that isn't supported by ads or by whales buying hats/coins/gems/crystals? Unfortunately, I think the expectation is now set for sub-5 dollar price tags or free with ads/MTs, which will doom the mobile platform to crummy casual shittiness from which it'll never recover.

You can play Clash of Clans without ads and without buying gems. Or even if you wanted to buy gems, just buy $10 worth or $20 worth and be done. Get your builder huts and start playing normally. The rest of the game doesn't require constant payments.

The idea behind good freemium games is you shouldn't need to pay to play. You can if you want.

Making $40 games isn't going to cut it for casual gamers. I'd gladly pay $40 for Battlefield 4, but this is mobile gaming, not serious PC gaming.

So what about the 10,000 cash grabs. Just find the right game to play. For every good app out there, there's 10,000 other bad apps. I'm pretty sure 95% of the app store and Play store is junk anyway, even if they aren't freemium.

In the end this thread is about Clash of Clans, not about the state of mobile gaming. I recommend you try before you bag on the game so quickly.

None of my Clash of Klan friends ever payed any money, and neither have I. There's absolutely no need to.

I played pretty heavily for a while, but after TH9 things slow down so much, and I didn't feel like putting the time in.

Yeah its quite a grind. The TH7 grind was decent. I finished in a month, but TH8 looks like it takes 120 days due to lab upgrades. TH9 is not too much longer... BUT it takes quite a while to grind out the farming for walls, so it could potentially be much longer than the 160 days needed of build time.

I actually have three accounts I play routinely, even if they have dropped almost to the level of just collecting mines and building once in a while. TH8 almost completely maxed (1 tesla to go, that's it), TH9 only working on walls (going to finish up the ones that cost 1M each then move on) and TH10 (about 60% maxed). I raid occasionally on the TH8 and TH9 bases to speed along resources, however on the TH10 I never raid anymore, 1K gold each click to find new fight and having to click often 100+ times to find a fight I can both win and is worth winning is just a PITA. Build times are outrageous at upper levels, but resource collection is slow, so things average out.

Also play Samurai Siege (raiding is MUCH more profitable, not uncommon to pull 2M+ resources in single raid, sometimes as high as 7-8M if really lucky), Dungeon Keeper, Arcane Battlegrounds and most recently, Castle Clash (been having LOTS of fun with this one!). If you like CoC you should definitely check out Castle Clash, think CoC with hugely overpowered heroes that can just go tear up a base. Much harder to resist spending real money, though...

I didn't like Castle Clash at all, personally. Just seemed clunky and I didn't really like how the heroes worked.

It definitely gets grindy at TH9 or so. I also have a town that I just collect resources on and upgrade once a week due to this.

I have been @TH9 for 6+ months now and am grinding away at lava walls (have 118). The struggle is definitely real.

It's not a bad game, and you can get by without spending a dime if you want. There's a way to gain the gems in game for free that you can buy using real money. It's not fast, but it does exist which is a nice change from most games that utterly lock you out if you don't cough up tons of real money.

However once I hit town hall level 8, I found that if I wasn't constantly keeping tabs on my town I can't upgrade. If I ignored my town at all, people would stomp through every 12 hours and take tons of resources that took days to harvest myself, because I wasn't willing to put in the hours of raiding required to take it from others. At TH8 or higher, it's no longer a casual game. OK for some people, but I gave up.

Because its hard to make a sophisticated game with a touch screen application. They are more like arcade gaming, simple rules, simple game. Sometimes you need to simplify the game to make it more attractive to all audiences.

As mentioned above, the game is FAR easier though if you just spend $10-20 at the very start to buy the extra builders. This allows you to consume your loot much faster and progress through the game at a completely different pace.

Also, there's a strategy to building TH8 late stage (applies to TH9/10 also somewhat). You tend to get hit most often by higher level players when your DE is high. Therefore, time your gold/elixir upgrades to be done while your DE is low (right after spending a big chunk) as you are far less likely to be hit by a skilled player when there is no DE available to steal. IE - stagger your upgrade cycles so you only have one resource high in storage at a time.
