more money, but not in the long run.
QL has two problems that are evident; one, its hard. since it was designed from the ground up as a e-sport, a new player has to learn a great deal before they can enjoy the game.
Before this latest update, there was a tight community; you played by the rules, which meant no joining games with balanced number of players (i.e. 3v3), no starting games without a shuffle, no laggers, no joining games outside your tier(skill rank).
Now, people, kids mostly, ignore these etiquette rules and thus every game is unbalanced, often to the point where one new player can totally destroy the score of a far superior team.
These kids are the ones that "play for fun"; they are still at that point in their life where "omg the plasma gun is so cool". The visual effects capture them, and they imagine more gameplay than they actually accomplish.
I get it that games were designed for that, but not Quake. This is the difference between play-fighting and MMA, they are so far apart they don't even belong in the same category.
And second thing, quake is ugly. It both looks and plays dreadful; people today are used to much more intuitive games, and quake just disappoints on all aspects.
In order to succeed in quake, you need to learn everything anew; the ridiculous physics, how to aim guns which are slower than player models, and how to abuse what is essentially a series of bugs in the movement system.
If someone, five years ago, showed me a demo of my own gameplay today, it would have made me puke; the screen shaking constantly dude to the constant dodging, the mouse movements to speedup strafejump, and the ridiculous models flying everywhere is enough to give anyone motion sickness. If i hadn't been dead broke for those 2 years i would not have stuck with quake, which, by the way, is going out.
There are far better games than QL out there .. some are F2P as well.
