picked it up this morning because I have a couple friends that play it. Unfortunately they are offline, and I keep picking fights with bears and wolves and dieing.. lol It seems enjoyable though, looking forward to when they are online so I can learn the ropes a little more.

Put a few hours in game now since yesterday, and really liking this game. Its got the fun factor of not being "to realistic" like WarZ was. That game I was always running low on food, water, and you could only run a short distance. Rust I can run full speed with no worries of burning out,. food is plentiful along with most materials to craft things.

After a few bad attempts of making a house or whatever you call it.. Im finally on the right path. I tucked it up in some rocks where its hard to see, hard to get to, and once I spend another day or two collecting wood I should have it pretty hard to access.

Looking forward to spending more time in Rust.

And as others have said,.. find a small server. Like my other post said I joined a server with a friend who is also an admin. Although he hasn't helped me, others have and are very generous in helping others out and giving things.

The only complaint I have,.. is when you build a shack, foundation, anything you cannot reclaim the materials. Once its built, its built unless someone uses C4 and destroys it.. then you still cannot reclaim the materials. It would be nice to get back all that wasted lumber I used building in bad spots.

I picked this up yesterday, had a lot of fun last night. I also had a rough time the first few hours, but finally was able to figure out enough to build a house and some storage boxes. I used that while I gather enough wood to build a "proper" house and put a metal door on it before I logged last night.

To me it's fun having to balance what I take with me versus what I leave in the house. I built a bow and some arrows and just took that while I went looking for some zombies, only to be killed by someone with a shotgun. Luckily I had left enough stuff in my house to build another one right away when I respawned. I've always enjoyed the exploration of the Elder Scrolls and Fallout games and this has some nice similarities with some "real" consequences if you venture into the wrong area.

They definitely need to add some more stuff to the world though. Somehow last night I wandered off into some barren wilderness area where nothing was populated other than terrain or trees. No resource nodes, no animals, nothing. I wandered around for a long time trying to find my way back to "civilization" before I gave up and had to suicide

I started playing Rust 3 days ago with a buddy of mine and am really hooked.

I pretty much just got it on a whim without really reading much about it and certainly didn't read anybody's advice or tips for starters, so it was kind of neat figuring things out on my own.

We joined a big official server with no pvp where some players have towering sky scraper structures.

We ended up trying to build a wooden shack right by the road but we used a wooden door. That was a mistake, wooden doors can get destroyed by a hatchet in a few minutes, less if there is a team of raiders like our case.

We were nearby when this happened and my friend ran in to try and salvage some stuff and he went up stairs (it was a 2x2 hut with a 2nd floor) but then they quickly destroyed the stairs (which are much weaker even than wooden door) and placed a ceiling, effectively trapping my friend upstairs because we found out that ceilings are invulnerable and wood walls require explosives to destroy. However he did have some spare materials and we didnt place a roof yet so he was able to build stairs to jump out the top.

Anyway, we realized building right by the road was another mistake. While we were there we were constantly being harassed and have players stand by our door hoping to sneak in when we enter/exit.

We scouted more remote areas and found a pretty big foundation and framing of a house that was never completed, so we took it over. We'd keep trying to build it up and every day people were trying to break in. I wasn't finishing the roof more concentrating on walls and we had raiders build stairs outside of our walls so that they can jump over the top. But we kept building and adding floors making it more difficult to get to our loot and sleeping bodies and then one day someone did something very suspicious: by this time the house was quite large, 5x5 footprint 4 stories high but again the roof wasn't finished and not very secure, but we had so many empty spaces inside with so many metal doors in maze-like halls we thought we were pretty safe unless someone used a lot of explosives.

However I log in one day dead, and when I run to the house to see what happened I see yet again a staircase built up to jump over onto the roof and then they dropped down to a section I didnt finish yet between a tall outer wall and an inner wall and built one staircase which got them directly adjacent to the one tile in my entire house where I was sleeping and had loot. This was a 1x1 space with 2 walls, 2 doors, ceiling and floor in a house now of probably close to 80-90 'boxes' of interior space, and thats the one space he pinpointed and penetrated. The rest of my house isnt empty either, I place large crates in many empty spaces to act as decoys because I know its possible to see through cracks in walls, but this guy didnt go for any of them, and several other stashes of loot in the house were untouched too, which were more accessible and easy to reach. Somehow he saw that one room on an upper floor I was in without being able to be adjacent to it without building that one staircase he built within the exterior walls.

And to make it even more weird, when I got into that space all the doors, walls, ceiling and floor were intact. Everything inside was destroyed including crates and sleeping bag. And I found him sleeping inside carrying a full load of my shit! wtf? I can only guess he used explosive to take out one wall, break in and carry some loads of my stuff home and then return to rebuild the wall he broke and disconnect inside, just to seriously fuck with me!

But despite how fun the game can be already the biggest problem I feel is the server lag and rubber banding. It is brutal and it happens often. I thought it was just the official server so I did join a small community server for a couple of hours and it too had these periods of time where the game would just suddenly become a lag fest for a couple minutes then stop. It's like the server takes a break from the game to mine bitcoins for a few minutes.

And BTW I did not have any fun on the small populated server. It was too easy to get resources and raid the rad towns, and thus boring. It was pvp too but everyone was friendly. It just didnt give me that excitement that the official server had where someone was always trying to break into my place.

Love this game and the updates Gary & team are pushing out so far.

I didn't think I would have a similar experience to the tense moments I found myself in Dayz until Rust. Building up a house and then to find yourself inside, completely alone, with 4 raiders outside is a very adrenaline filled experience.

Finding a good server is key with this game. Do you enjoy having things wiped every few days? Or do you wish to hold on to your belongings and home for a long time? I too like the tense PvP fights & raids. It's just fun as hell finding out which walls/doors to blow to make it to the glorious stash room of an unsuspecting player.

I've been playing it and loving it as well. Found a pretty solid server where day times are pretty chill, get stuff done and the night times turn into a battleground over air drops.
As mentioned above the fire fights are really intense. Way more so than something like BF where a death is a simple re-spawn and hit the objective again.

For an Alpha, the game is damn fun.

Update on my end,.. I was really hooked playing 8-10 hours a day but have since backed off. Our server was wiped, and all the bad people left because you can no longer craft C4. However most everyone else left as well, because of all the raiding we had prior. Now just hoping the server numbers pick back up, because we have a good core group of people, but just don't play that often because the server is so dead.

Ive built several houses for noobs when they come in to give them a jump start as well. My house is unraidable and ungrievable on our server since C4 is so rare, and I try to help others out if they ask advice as well.

I'm tired of all these indie games sporting permadeath or other roguelike elements. When did that trend start?

Am I the only one who can't stand the idea of being nude in the game? Mortal Online tried it and I see no point in having a bunch of wieners hanging out and making it pretty awkward explaining to people why you're playing a game with naked men running around in the forest tea bagging each other

*raises hand.

You are not alone.

They can set nudity to be on or off by default. There's also a console command for individuals to turn it on or off.

I won't lie, I turned censoring off. There was one mortified look from my wife but when I explained it was a kind of apocalyptic science game she has since backed off that I'm not in the closet.

Hahaha, I think the nudity is hilarious. Are people that insecure about it? Whatevs.

I bought it this past weekend and have played about 4 hours of it, according to Steam. My biggest problem is dealing with dickheads when I first start and have no resources. I don't get why people would pick on a dude like me who only has a shitty little shelter and a hunting bow. I guess just to be a dick. I can see where it would be quite a bit of fun with a good group of people. I've watched KrebsCOHO's and BaronVonGamez's videos on YouTube and the ones with them running around with that fucking Indian war cry are fucking hilarious, LOL.

One thing I wish they would add is the ability to adjust the voice receive volume. I can barely frickin hear what anyone says when they speak. If I turned it up loud enough to hear well, I'd be deaf from the normal game sounds. I'm using speakers and not headphones, but still, the sound levels are way different. Guess I'll have to use headphones, bah.

Its been awhile since I played...can you not decrease the game sound volume and then just crank up the speakers? I remember being able to adjust the music volume at least (I turned that off, music just leaves you vulnerable to being snuck up on)

There's a known issue. He's basically hacking. The files that cause solid-objects to exist in the game world is actually held client-side instead of server-side. All you have to do is load into game, run up to whatever wall you want to be inside, log off, remove the file, log back in and step forward a few steps, log off, replace the file, log back in and bam you're inside someone's house without destroying anything.

Then you loot up everything you want and repeat the process to get back out.

Rust has quite a few other major issues that are the reason that I quit playing this fucked up piece of shit game.

Just wanted to update people on the game (almost a year since the last post).

Here's a basic list of differences listed in order of importance to me.

1: Tool Cupboards. You craft one from 1000 pieces of wood, and place it inside of a structure you're building. It creates a radius around your build that disallows anyone from building anything within that radius (no more stairs to your roof). You must have physical access to the cupboard to allow yourself to build, which you can toggle off and on. If a stranger can gain physical access to the cupboard, then they can gain access to build in, or around, your structure, and also deauthorize any previous cupboard users. Bottom line, keep your cupboard safe, or even hidden. The only way you can destroy a cupboard is by destroying whichever 1x1 foundation it is placed on. If you place one on the bare ground, it is there forever.

2. The graphics of the game have improved dramatically. The textures are more sharp and precise. The landscape is more detailed and realistic. The wildlife is more realistic looking.

3. The map has changed some. The landscape is different, so if you knew your way around the old map well, be prepared to re-learn it. Currently, there are no roads in the game. They are, however coming back soon with better textures.

4. There are a lot less bugs... not sure I can go into details, but the game is a lot more stable than it once was.

5.

That's all I can add for now, I'm sure I'll think of more later.

If anyone is interested, I have my own new server (NY/NJ server location). It is generally only populated by me and my two friends, and a couple of random strangers every now and then. If you'd like to join a server and build to your hearts content, feel free to PM me for the IP and details.
