Like if you wanted some tiny little villa in spain or italy or something as a vacation home. Asking for me and a friend.

Make sure you have a reputable lawyer go over the documents with a fine tooth comb

How do you split the profit if there is any? With a knife if there is argument? 😂

I kicked around the idea of a villa in Puerto Vallarta or similar, in Mexico.
It is in the restricted zone within 50 kilometers of the coast, so you purchase it as a trust.
This site has a good explanation.

Might be worth the spam factor to check it out. They cover all sorts of foreign real estate.

at the end of the day we have decided to keep the flexibility of renting where we choose.
It would be different if we could drive there, but we are flying wherever we are going from the PNW.
If i were based in San Diego, we would have had something a long time ago, down Baja.

We've toyed with the idea of getting a place in PV but similarly just decided to keep renting instead. Neither one of us really wants to deal with another property and 7-10 days is really all we want to do at a stretch.

One reason that I went to law school was because the idea of always making decisions with a solid base, in what I will label - "ignorance and fear" - was distasteful to me in an extremely visceral way.

Now you want me to go back to dealing with those emotions again - since I wouldn't even think about being "reeducated."

You know, I'm not sure I like you guys any more. [shaking my head with great piety]

Have a place in the Mediterranean I want to sell, but it's half my sister's so working on her. Getting a price estimate from a realtor over there any day now

I think we may do a home exchange program when we get the new place built. The city does not allow short term rentals like VRBO, but they can just suck it on exchanges. We can also host some folks to get started.

We reached a similar conclusion for us - we'd rather have the flexibility to rent where we want to rent and no have to deal with a property

I have 1²' of Islay. I got it by buying a bottle of scotch. Haven't visited yet, but as rent, I'm owed a dram of Laphroaig on demand if I get there. I'm also not allowed to build on it, but I'm cool with the glass of scotch. No point in blighting the landscape with development.

There is a program called Trusted House Sitters. People use it to have cheaper pet sitting or house watching for their vacations and whatnot, and the sitter gets a place to stay.

yes that is one program. There are a few.
The new house is designed for guests from the start. We could host some folks upstairs and never really mingle with them, unless they wanted to use the big kitchen facilities.
