I was lucky, the required reading books at my school actuially required some thought.

Pedro Paramo and Ficciones were both required reading, and to this day are still two of my favorite books. Ficciones (by bourges) is just mind blowing . . . if you ever have a chance to read it you won't be dissapointed. It's ~20 short stories divided into two sections, and they tie together in really interesting ways. They cover everything from a scathing criticism of the Argentienan critics to "The Three Versions of Judas" which is a very interesting view of the death and rebirth of christ, and Judas' role (I won't ruin it). Also some of the stories are almost purely abstract views of reality, the most famous of these being "The Library of Babel" which if you ever have to take higher division college courses in english or philosophy is probably going to be referenced indirectly.

Though, the Scarlet Letter was. I hated that book, it still pisses me off to this day.

High school made me hate reading.

I'm serious about this, too. Before I started high school? I read stuff I liked: "Where the Red Fern Grows", "The Incredible Journey", "A Wrinkle in Time".

In HS?

"The Awakening"
"The Scarlet Letter"
"Wuthering Heights"
"The Joy Luck Club"

That's just a sample. It made my cynical and jaded when it comes to works of fiction and I still haven't recovered.

Well, that would do it.

If I had to read "The Awakening" in the same year as "The Scarlet Letter" people would have died.

We had to read Wuthering Heights, The Scarlet Letter, and The Awakening as well, but just for kicks she decided to throw in 1984 as well. It seemed kind of akward thrown in with the feminazi curriculum that was English 4. My teacher obviously hated men, and I took an AP class so there were 10 girls to 3 of us guys, and my god would she get them rilled up.
