I would say it would make a good movie, but then again, this is the kind of tale that works best in story format where your imagination is allowed a little more latitude.

Movie wouldn't work... part of the horror effect is that you don't actually hear the scream.... It's described as something bone chilling, which is different to everyone. You don't see the hallucinations, so when you think about it you can almost imagine it happening in your own house. Notice the house description is very vague. Put all that into a movie, and it destroys a lot of the mental image. Plus the blair witch project worked because you never saw the witch. In the story here once he's hallucinating he does see stuff. Much more terrifying if you imagine what that is instead of some persons vision of what it could be. I've never been scared by the appearance of something I saw in a movie. What the costume designer thought was scary and what I thought was scary was completely different at the time.

I don't know. You could manage a scream, just about, and everything up to the hallucinations pretty well in a movie, up until the point where he sees something. Occasionally movies use the power of suggestion really well (eg blair witch)
and it works even better than a book form would. However, thats about as common as extinction level events (and as scary when they happen).

Anyone know who wrote this?

No, actually it was backed up quite well with pictures. I remember it well, but it scared the wits out of me.

Finally got around to reading the story Nemesis linked to. Unfortunately it becomes all rather predictable after he climbs through alone. I found myself thinking . o O (Have to find a way to make his lights go out. Ahh! Hits head on ceiling and breaks his main light. Okay. That's one down. Now, to put his backup lights out of commission. Ah hah. Weak batteries. Check. Now something needs to happen to the phone to make him really feel alone.. Ahh. Broken wire. Good.)

It was a good story up until this point.

I am still reading this. I have to wait till my lunch break to finish it. I am at the point where the phone dies.

So does anyone think this actually DID happen?

3- I will NOT reveal the location of the cave to ANYONE for ANY REASON! So please don't ask! I refuse to be held accountable for anyone's life but my own. I will refer to the cave as Mystery Cave. That is NOT its real name.

Yea whatever.

I just got done reading the WHOLE thing... too damned long, but I don't think it would be any good in a Clif notes version.

I personally think it's PURE fiction. Everything just fits together too nicely....

a good read, although a bit long

It just seems to fit too perfectly to be a non fiction, besides, those pics could have been easily taken for the purpose of authenticity effect

So who's going to play detective and try to figure out where this came from?

How do you do a "Who is" search for www.jrlweb.com?

There are not many clues in the narrative about location, could be pretty much anywhere. The author could very well have found a strange hole in a cave and decided to explore, but the rest could have easily been fabricated. Re-reading the story, the information given seems intentionally vague...

"in a cave not far from my home"
"We got a room, dinner was excellent"
"We left town early in the afternoon to beat traffic"
They must be close to his home... But not so close that they wouldn't get a hotel room (unless ted and his fat friend are gay)

The only hints to the actual location:

"The cave was "discovered" several decades ago when construction in the area unearthed its entrance"
"visited by mostly locals in the area and avid cavers in the region"
"A nearby tree serves as a good anchor point"
"Beer cans can be found intermittently in the cave, mostly in the upper half"
"To prepare for this trip we contacted the local cave rescue group and got permission to borrow their low voltage two-way phone."
"Just a short drive from just about anywhere in the country is a cave waiting to be explored"

I stumbled across this maybe a year or so back while browsing the intraweb one night. Very good story and very well written. I'd read it again but it just wouldn't be the same

Religion believers are bunch of superstitious freaks!

Things that gave away...

A large round rock that moved and revealed a new passage.

Like it was moved by some mechanical device.

My pulse began to quicken. I looked down at the rope only to discover to my horror that the rope was disappearing down into the darkness. SOMETHING WAS PULLING THE ROPE BACK INTO THE CAVE!!!

Ooookay!... smoking pot wasn't a good idea, dude.

I actually laughed while reading through it.

Jesus!... there are only few sounds that would cause this:

1. Mother nature sound (water, wind, grinding, and etc...)
2. Human/Animal sound (scream, breathing and etc...)
3. Mechanical sound

The rest is in YOUR head!
