I remember playing this game at my friends house all the time and don't remember what it was, undoubtedly it was shareware and a few things I remember about it:

1) Had really good graphics for the time, probably 256+ colors

2) Was a DOS game

3) The game was an overhead view, generally of a jungle like island

4) The plane you piloted was always in motion but I think you may have been able to speed up or slow down.

5) You could turn right or left which would rotate the ship, so it wasn't a top down scroller because you could turn 360 degrees.

6) It was futuristic / sci-fi

7) I think we would load it off several floppies, which at the time was unusual for a game to span multiple floppies.

8) It was for a PC, we probably we using a 386 at the time.

Any guesses?

the unique thing about it was that the plane could rotate/turn which changed its direction, but the overhead view stayed the same, you basically would end up circling or lining up for strafing runs on target like turrets etc.. So unlike Raiden where you couldn't turn, merely strafe side to side.

Were there any space components, or was it always over jungle or other masses of land? There are a TON of 360 degree space shooters where you fly around forever dodging asteroids and shooting enemy ships and stuff, but I can't think of any in that genre that involve jungle.

Axelay? Again, you couldn't turn but you could aim around you. Your guns would start out firing behind you and rotate to the front as you held the fire button. You had to tap at different rates to keep them to the sides or behind you.

Edit: NM. I think it was SNES only.

You are absolutely terrible at describing video games. It's frustrating just to read your post.

1. WTF does a 'overhead view' mean exactly? Top-down vertical scroller? (like Raiden) Side-scroller? (like R-Type)

2. Is it a Japanese-style shoot 'em up with floating power ups? Is it American style with more simulation-based game play?

4) The plane you piloted was always in motion but I think you may have been able to speed up or slow down.

What does this mean, forced scrolling or player-controlled scrolling? Speed up and down- wtf does this mean, speed relative to the screen?

You're obviously a newb. Overhead means literally over the head, i.e. over the top, i.e. top-down which is why everyone is mentioning Raiden, Tyrian, Raptor, etc. To the op's credit it is one of the more detailed descriptions (gameplay mechanics-wise) I've ever seen on a forum.

EDIT: And I assume he means speed of the plane, which would be determined by relative speed between it and the ground below.

Umm, overhead-view is a somewhat standard way to describe a view from above in any videogame. It does not ever mean "over the shoulder" like some wanna-be FPS types that aren't quite "first" person.

So it's a top-down free-moving non-forced scroller that can move 360 degrees. Probably American made.
