anyone replace their oil drain plug with one of these?

Yeah, but it would make the job ridiculously easy.

If somebody laid my concerns about leaking to rest, I'd buy one in a heartbeat.

pulling the drainplug is the easy part. Dropping the filter is the part that gets oil everywhere. Unless you're like me, and you grossly underestimate the backpressure behind 6 quarts of oil in the side-mounted drainplug of a Chevy Tahoe oil pan. erm... ok yeah, it would make it pretty easy.

if you go by 3 month intervals, in 10 years that's 40 oil changes.
is that enough for you?

yeah one thing i hate about changing oil is getting oil everywhere no matter how careful i am. taking hte plug off usually creates a little mess on my hands which isn't the issue, but the stupid filter is what spills oil eveywhere. i just have a rag underneath it that will catch all the leaking oil.

3 months? you drive 10,000 miles in three months? Any newer vehicle using synthetic oil will not require an oil change every three months.

My friend has one. His leaked for a few days but then stopped. He's only had it for about 4-5months.

That would be my main concern with this device.

I had one on my '91 Integra, but it was made by Fram and only cost 10 dollars. The Integra had 64K on it when I got it, so I figured it had more than a few oil changes left in it.

They are only $20...my concern is on my lowered car that would be something else that could get caught on something. I know people with these, not sure if they are using this same brand though.

I also heard since they are not flush with the inside of the oil pan, not all of the old oil will come out.

1. why do u assume everyone is using synthetic?
2. why do u assume everyone's car usage is set in stone?

i'm going by the average recommended change interval. you are naming an extreme.

Not worth it. Just stick with the factory (usually magnetic) drain plug, do not overtighten it and use a 6 point socket or box wrench to loosen / tighten it (on my car I use a 6 pt ratcheting box wrench .. plenty of leverage with that)

I was putting 5-8k miles a month on my old van.

Fram tried these a while back, they didn't go so well. Leakage problems were common IIRC. http://www.xlevelonline.com/img/FRM-SD-1.jpg

Depending on how low your vehicle is and how far it comes out of your oil pan if it catches a speed bump very bad things can happen. In the Jeep forums they are typically frowned upon because they catch rocks but your average person isn't rock crawling.

I prefer to use a fluid extractor like this: http://www.amazon.com/Moeller-...-4-Liter/dp/B000MTB83M

Pull the dipstick, insert tube, pump it a few times, come back 10 minutes later...pump it a couple more times and then it's done. This does get >99% of the oil out, I've pulled the plug after using the pump and just gotten drops. No crawling underneath, no trying to catch the oil, much less chance of spills.

Every 3k is extreme these days.

Every 3k is extreme these days.

and so is 10k on conventional oil.

even so, there are those that still do 3k, like my gf's dad, which convinced my gf to do the same.
heck, there are those that do 3k on synthetic.

wtf, that's like getting a new medication from your doc for headaches and the learning period is a few days of not being able to breath properly. fail!

I'd be worried about this thing also over stuff like snow or ice for those who live in climates in which they're potentially driving over such stuff.

I asked him about it tonight, apparently he forgot the crush washer. Since he put that in, he has been leak free.

Lots of people I know run a Fumoto valve on their STIs and WRXs here in Canada through winter with harsh conditions and lots of salt.

I havent heard of anyone complain, although I think someone mentioned one was torn off by bottoming out.
