A hospital using something that costs under $xx,xxx.xx is impossible, same with the government.

Fucking bullshit. They have people making fine finger movements, when the device can hardly tell my asshole from my elbow half the time.

It is a nice commercial, and while I don't really think Kinect is that good for gaming and is overpriced for that, its nice to see Microsoft finally realize the potential of one of their products and not try and lock it down (they're releasing a Windows driver for it).

If Microsoft would take a more open approach to some stuff and use its money to get unique things like this, surface, and courier out to the public they'd get a lot more publicity as well as get rid of a lot of the criticism levied at them.

Yes and no. They really didn't show many that the Kinect couldn't handle (the violin one is the one that I'd call BS on, but even then I don't know that there's much being done with it beyond noticing her hands and moving the one for the strumming). I do think its misleading, but they aren't that far off.

Plus, I would think it would work even better if you had 2 or more, as well as utilize "dots" (think the big light balls on the PS3's Move controller) for it to focus on (which would improve its handling of fine movements). Not to mention upgrade the components (i.e. higher resolution).

Many games I don't think are really well calibrated for use with it to be honest, so I wouldn't judge it solely based on that.

Fuck the machine. I can hardly tell you from an asshole most of the time.

That was shit

demonstrates their product and its power perfectly. real world examples.

microsoft on the other hand shows some bullshit that isn't even thought out. yea mime at playing the cello...or operating on someone..lol..its a joke. like those racing games they expect you to play pretending you are holding a steering wheel...an inferior solution for no reason other than to force usage of kinnect

Sunnybrook is apparently using a Kinect in the operating room, see the below vid. Another thing too is that the Kinect will have higher resolution when used with a PC, instead of the xbox, which will allow for picking up finger movements and other fine movements. The kinect supports it, but from what I understand is disabled in the current xbox as it is too expensive CPU wise. On a PC that will not be a problem. MSFT also recently released a commercial SDK for it too.

general movement gui operations is fine.

but the commercial gets into the ridiculous, playing piano in mid air and other obvious nonsense. high precision tasks its just not good for.

Bullshit. Have you seen the camera footage from this thing? The camera is simply too low res to pick up finger movements.

doesnt the ad say "Depictions Visionary" or something like that? Yea the camera res is too low right now, but that doesnt mean future iterations of the Kinect can't pick up fine movements.

Right now, yes. In the future, the resolution can be quadrupled to pick up finger movements, see the below article from last year. It has not been done as of yet since it uses to many CPU cycles on the xbox. Now, on a PC or dedicated platform it should not be a problem from what I understand. Now, does this mean it will allow someone to play an "Air Piano"? I don't know, picking up 10 individual finger movements is a tall order the more I think about it.

Microsoft's Kinect team is working to increase the resolution of the depth sensor used to 640 x 480. If the update happens, the increase to 640 x 480 would effectively quadruple the accuracy of the sensor and allow the sensor the resolution needed to detect finger and hand rotation.

The use in the operating room actually seems like a really good idea. The staff that are scrubbed in could interact with data.

Microsoft is out Apple-ing Apple with a lot of their newer products.

that was my thought as well.

Watch Apple release a sensor on the next iPad to track simple hand motions, then comes the next Apple frivolous lawsuit as they claim Microsoft stole Kinect from them.

even if it could, that would be a crappy way of doing things, better for precision is some kind of hands on interface with force feed back+tactile response.

its not about picking up the movement, but whether you can actually do the movements in mid air. people need feedback, even this pic of a virtual kb is a joke because without actual buttons the experience is prone to error and annoyance.

its like when wii games have sword fighting, without anything to smack into you aren't actually doing anything but flailing around randomly, it just doesn't work.
