There's a reason that Kinect is branded "Kinect for Xbox 360". All along Microsoft planned that as a first release. The discussion is that they will integrate the technology into laptops and tablets too once the price point comes down and the technology shrinks enough.

There's also a "Kinect for Windows" brand out there now as well. The resolution on the Kinect for 360 was gimped to keep costs down according to many reports. Some believe it is only gimped in software and that the resolution can be increased with proper software updates as well. Either way, all concepts are feasible given the open source developments and improved hardware rumored to exist.

even if it could, that would be a crappy way of doing things, better for precision is some kind of hands on interface with force feed back+tactile response.

I agree. I don't see skills like playing the violin or the piano ever being moved to a virtual world.

demonstrates their product and its power perfectly. real world examples.

microsoft on the other hand shows some bullshit that isn't even thought out. yea mime at playing the cello...or operating on someone..lol..its a joke. like those racing games they expect you to play pretending you are holding a steering wheel...an inferior solution for no reason other than to force usage of kinnect

lol "depictions are visionary"

It made a huge splash in the robotics community. A cheap, decent 3d camera is a big deal.

It seemed like they couldn't figure out whether to support it or not for a while, but they've gotten on board and released some pretty decent tools.

They've got it backwards with the bomb-diffusing robot, though. The kinect would be on the robot, not looking at the operator.

It's not for operating on someone - it's so the surgeon can interact with a computer without touching it and risking contamination.

Tactile response will eventually happen. I distinctly remember an interview with Gates where he was talking about a camera where you could pick up a tennis racket and play tennis (and the system would recognize it). This was before the Kinect... The interviewer said that's pretty much the Wii and he began a rant on how it's not like the Wii.

Yea. A bunch of shit that Kinect cannot do and will never do. This is why Microsoft is perpetually fucked. All they can do is come up with these Minority Report videos but can't seem to make anything new or innovative when it matters -- now.

For instance when Microsoft released this $15,000 big-ass table:

Apple released affordable product this to the general public:

"Some of Apple's peers understand the need to manage expectations. Have you ever seen RIM show off a BlackBerry prototype? What about Nintendo? They don't pull a Microsoft-like move of showing very early-stage products to reporters and potential customers. They simply pull out a Wii or a DS and say, "This is it. Give it a try.""

You're not going to play the violin with Kinnect, or actually manipulate physical objects with it. That requires feedback.

The girl in the classroom interacting with the DNA was interesting, but the ad is manipulative (shocking for an ad) and hyperbolic.

Other than the Violin playing (Which with subsequent iterations will be possible) what shown in the video is impossible?

And how the hell is it not innovative? The general public also seems to like it... considering it is the fastest selling consumer electronic device in history.

Great Ad, great product, great company. Greatly underappreciated company, it has revolutionized the world in a way that lovely human ass apple wont be able to do in million years. Kinetic is a product that apple could not even comprehend. Screw apple, I am glad it will be over soon.

Anything where the person was sitting down, for one. Then all the stuff that involved detecting finger movement, there's quite a bit of it in the video. My beef is that Microsoft has to keep doing these "in the future..." videos because their present-day products are so mundane. If Kinect is so fantastic as it is today the video would be about its current capabilities.

They also have the other future tech video where basically everyone is using iPhones and iPads with no bezels. Even their vision of the future lacks vision.

No the basic premise for the video was to celebrate the 1 year anniversary of a great product, to show what the "hacking" community around kinect has been doing and what the device is capable of. Also called the "Kinect Effect", which to them means:

We built Kinect to revolutionize the way you play games and how you experience entertainment. But along the way, people started using Kinect in ways we never imagined. From helping children with autism, to helping doctors in the operating room, people are taking Kinect beyond games. And that’s what we call the Kinect Effect.

I still don't get it... Besides the Violin playing all of that is possible and/or happening and apparently there is a way to "up" the resolution on Kinects used on PC's.

And there's like a million more videos on youtube of people using the Kinect in cool ways

i KNEW dwell would come in here! I have nothing against apple...i think they make great consumer products. Some of their users, OTOH....

dwell, I'm sure you're a great guy, but it's so sad that you can't see anything past your apple fanboyism! This thread was about a well done microsoft ad, not about apple! And you're ranting about microsoft ads always being about the future tech? Well this IS an ad about what's possible when a large company opens up their tech to the modding community. It has made Kinect the fastest selling consumer device in history. Has apple ever embraced the mod community like that? (I honestly don't know...educate me)

btw, that guy has a really cool site!!

Funny you should link that, because kinetic is a step in the right direction according to that rant.

Unlike "pictures under glass," you can incorporate other objects with kinetic to give you tactile feedback.

Unlike "pictures under glass," kinetic allows you to virtually manipulate objects in a 3 dimensional manner, not just sliding around on a flat surface.

Unlike "pictures under glass," kinetic can track the movement of your limbs, your full body even, and not just that of a single finger.

So I think that author would love the vision of interaction offered by kinetic.

Okay, I can agree with all the things future Kinect can do.

But playing Violin? What a pretentious crock of shit. It can measure the finger fretting, the micro movement of vibrato, and the super subtle bow action? Not even in my life time.

again no, the site is complaining about artificially restricted interaction, and kinnect is restricted by not having precision and tactile feedback leading to unnatural usage.

playing air guitar violin for example, about the most stupid way you could try to play an instrument.

Windows weekly also had a rant on this http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uONwxN9uisc

It's a friggin ad.

Hilarious to see so many get butt hurt over what the ad is.

"OMG U CANT DO THAT WITH KINCT WAH WAH WAH WAH"

Pretty much every ad on the planet is like this. Must be because it's Microsoft.
