Anyone seen a dead Raptor?

Could be because they are not as common as the 7200rpm drives, but they do seem very reliable. I've had the original Raptor in my system for quite some time, and I was thinking of getting the Raptor-II for my system upgrade I'm doing now.

Would be intersting to hear if there are anyone with bad experiences of these drives? Haven't read much about it on these forums, which I consider a good sign.

I heard they are noisy, so never bought one. Hope my info is out of date, as Iwould like a reliable drive.

I'm sure they're out there somewhere. The fact that you don't hear about it on the net (where anyone with an internet connection and a complaint can make themselves heard) should be encouraging.

I have read several reports of dead Raptors. That said, their reliability still seems to be above that of most ATA drives. Every drive can (and eventually will) die.

As ronnn said, Raptors are very loud. I heard one spinning away in a tower once and thought it was a 15k RPM SCSI drive (I've used numerous high-end Macs for NL video editing with high-speed SCSI drives, so I know what they sound like). For the best in quiet and reliability, I've bought almost entirely Seagate drives since 1991 (had a brief run with IBM - stay away from the Deathstars!). The 160GB Seagate 7200.7 SATA drive in the machine I'm using right now is all but inaudible. It's probably the quietest drive I've ever used - and the five year warranty is reassuring.

Western Digital makes good drives, though, and if noise isn't a concern, you should be fine with the Raptor.

I have a pair of 36GB Raptors and so far they have been good. I don't find them loud at all, my case fans are louder (and they aren't too bad). The 72GB Raptors are supposed to be even quieter though.

I have heard of dead raptors, but I think that was due to outside influences. At the time, people found it odd the way they died. I have a 2nd gen raptor, I don't find it that loud. At least, I never hear it unless I'm defragging or some kind of scan, which isn't often.

I've had a dead 1st 36GB Raptor. The Raptor would continually try to spin-up on boot and sometimes would be successful and work but usually wouldn't. RMA'd that sucker though.

Agreed, I have a pair of Raptors-II in raid 0. I can barely hear them unless I am defragging. They are not that much louder than my 160GB WD1600JB (7.2k 8mb) that is in the same case, and they are definately so much quieter than my Maxtor Diamond Max Plus 8? (80GB, 7.2k, 2MB)

I bought a Raptor on the trading forums here and it arrived DOA. The guy sent it in one of the flat rate priority boxes, the flatter version. Well because it was slim it didn't alllow for enough packaging to absorb shock to the drive. I hope you guys are right because I love my Raptor and would hate to be without it again.

I got on a a while ago and it was DOA. When powered up, it would just make a clicking sounds, as if the drive head was stuck and could not move. I RMA'ed it and got another one.

Raptors have a 5 year warranty, but no hard drive is perfect so there are always going to be defective ones. I put a 74gb model into a workstation and I didn't find it to be very loud. But with 6 fans in the system, noise doesn't really matter too much to me!

I had a dead Rapor 74 GB. I am sure that I did it on accident. It was sandwiched between another 74 and a 200. Heat buildup. I now have fans on the Raptors. They do run hotter.

Mine are still goin strong after almost 3 years, but the connector for the data cable is broken on one of them, so any slight bump of the cable, it doesn't see the drive

Do a search for Raid 0 threads I am sure I have read more then a few reports of raptors going and killing all the data...Not saying they are unreliable I am just saying they probably have similar rates to others, just that they make up a smaller segment of the market....

I have two 74GB Raptors and they are loud only when loading a great deal of data, but for the most part are not audible enough to be an issue.

For all the DOAs, though, you can't really blame WD for all of them as many could be the shipper's fault.

I have had 2 dead 36gb raptors, however they were the first gen (bought them right when they came out). They both had heat issues and I RMA'ed them both and get two new ones which work fine.

A guy I work with is now on his 3rd Raptor in less than a year.

Relatively computer savy as well.
