One might be able to get a Fast Feed for just under $50.

Otherwise, check out the Andis BGRC. It's $115-ish on Amazon. Freaking amazing clipper. Cuts closer and more thoroughly than the Fast Feed. Since I shave to #000 and am actually bald, it matters. If you want to save money, Fast Feed is perfectly fine.

There's also the Classic 76 for about $150, which cuts hair amazingly. Problem is that it's higher maintenance.

Yep, it comes down to Andis and Oster....from the research I've done over the years.

PS. Classic 76 is BIG and not very agile. It is probably the best clipper on the market but I would not recommend it for cutting your own hair. This is where size matters (as you have to hold the clipper in all kinds of ways hehe).

Quality Clipper + T trimmer and an extra mirror should do the trick for most.

Been shaving my dome for at least 10 years and you sick fucks who say use a headblade are insane. Maybe I'm not too coordinated, but I slashed my head on two different occasions, once across the back of my head and the other time on top. Looked like a slaughterhouse in my shower and on my towel. My wife was horrified. I use a Quattro razor for my face and dome and do them at the same time, in the shower. Don't need any mirror, i am able to go by feel because I've done it for so long.

OP, get it shaved down tight and get some sun on it to even it up. Then go full Kojak. It will look much better than the chemo patients you see walking around.

Peace

I actually don't like the headblade, I seemed to always cut myself when I used it rather than when I use my mach 3. I do LOVE their shave gel though.

OP here are my tips:

The first time it's going to take a lot of time, it's best to buzz your hair down as short as possible before going at it with a razor. I shave mine in the shower (I have a shower mirror which helps some, but you can't really see much of your head anyways so I do it mostly by feel). You'll probably have to reapply shaving gel/cream A LOT (I wouldn't be surprised if you reapplied 10 times in some spots). Making sure your head is well covered with shaving gel will greatly improve your chances of not cutting yourself. If you do get a nick on your head it doesn't really hurt, but it will bleed and bleed for quite a long time compared to cuts on other places of your body.

Don't use one of the 4 or 5 blade razors, they will clog very frequently - I use a Mach 3 and if it's been more than a week it clogs with every 1/2" swipe in the parts where my hair is thicker. Once you get used to shaving your head you can do it in under 5 minutes, it's best to do every other day but at a minimum once a week.

thanks!

I already use a safety razor for my face, so I'm good on the razor part. Though its sounding like I might need to invest in a steno pencil

I bought and used a Classic 76 for a year. It was okay. I was very impressed at how easily it cut through hair compared to the Fast Feed. However, it has a round body, which makes it very difficult to orient properly doing the top and back without a lot of practice.

The main reason I got rid of it was because I didn't care for the maintenance (grease, lube, carbon brushes, etc.). The noise and fan vents were also annoying. Amazing cutter though. But for some reason, it still didn't cut as closely as the Andis BGRC even when the blade was new (same #000).

I'd say you are coordinated! I never could get the hang of shaving my dome freehand. Cut my head to ribbons. Switched back to a wet shaver for a while but jeez it takes SO LONG with electric razor. In the last 7 years since I started using the headblade I 've only cut myself once and can shave my head in about 3 minutes. Bonus points for the fact it looks like a matchbox car.

Mach 3 head here. Feels sooo good when freshly shaved!

There really is nothing about hair I miss that a hat can't fix.

I want to say more, but it's hard to express how nice it is lol..

I've been shaving every other day for a few years now. I use a Mach Fusion in the shower, just before getting out. I've tried using my DE razor a few times, but getting behind the head will take some more practice.

After a little time, it's second nature. I'm much more likely to cut myself shaving my neck at this point than I am to cut my scalp.

I have gotten a couple bad burns, so a hat is highly recommended.

Dont forget: Moisturize!!!!! Can't stress this enough. Especially if you are shaving for the first few times. It really sucks to have your head burning with an ugly looking rash from irritation. I use the cheapo Afta aftershave all over my face and head. Makes a huge difference when I dont. After you shave your head, try to pat it dry, not rub it raw. Keeps irritation down also. But by all means, get the aftershave on your head as soon as you dry head off.

Edit: as poster stated above, behind the head is tricky. The part where your skull angles up from your neck to the curve of the skull is pretty difficult to shave properly. Takes a bit of practice.

i currently use a panasonic electric razor (just shave my face and keep heading north )

is the #000 on the Andis a closer shave? or is there a blade that goes even closer (i'm going for smooth, no stubble)?

... I tried using a Philips / Norelco electric razor on my head AFTER I botched it with a Mach3 once. The Philips brought it down to virtually nothing, very smooth, and turned my head into velcro -- terrible experience taking a shirt off.

The #000 blade is nowhere near as close as the Philips or probably electric razors in general. On paper, the #000 is 0.5mm. In reality, it's closer to 1 mm, maybe a bit more. I don't feel rough stubble when I run my hand through it.

I tried a #0000 blade once (0.25mm on paper) and, while it did give me razor burn, it still wasn't as close to an electric razor. This blade may have also given me a terrible rash -- I stopped using it after that. It was sitting on the store shelf for a while when I got it, so maybe it was a metal preservative. That or I ate/touched something.

Thanks for the insight Imp. One of the norelco's did come up in a search on amazon (5580 headgroomer). may just give that a shot when price drops again.

I'm tired of haircuts. I want to shave my head but I'm worried about a couple things:
What about a tan line? I tan well so my face is tan. Will I have a weird hair tan line?

When you first do it, you will have a noticeable color difference. You will be paler where the sun has never shown. Within 24-72 hours you will have stubble that will darken the same areas, and you will be rocking the Jason Statham look.

After a couple of weeks of shaving the skin will toughen up and darken naturally. Use tanning lotion/sunscreen if you want to accelerate the process.

How hard is it to get all the hair?

Not hard at all.

Use clippers to get it down as far as possible. Then use a multi-blade razor and some quality shave butter or shave soap. Do NOT use shaving cream. Shaving cream will dry and numb your skin. You will get a much closer, smoother, and more comfortable shave with shaving soap or shaving butter.

Go slow and use your free hand to feel for stubble and the areas you have missed. When your whole head feels smooth you are done. When finished use lotion to moisturize and protect the skin. If you can take it, you can use some rubbing alcohol (or any aftershave lotion) to tone and tighten your scalp (be warned it will sting a LOT until your scalp is used to it).

Should I shave it down to a #2 guard for a month or so to let my head tan?

Anything else I should think of?

You will get better results if you just shave it smooth and keep it that way. Use a tanning lotion if you want to get color faster.

If you decide to do it, be prepared for the shock. It takes a few days to get used to seeing (and feeling) yourself without hair. Once your brain gets used to it, it becomes natural. Make it a 30 day challenge (as recommended on the Sly Bald Guys Forum http://www.slybaldguys.com/smf/). Shave your head and keep it smooth for 30 days to give your brain time to adjust. If at the end of 30 days you decide shaved isn't right for you, you simply let your hair grow back.

I am currently using...
Proraso Shave Soap/Dollar Shave Club Shave Butter
Badger hair brush to build and apply the lather
Edwin Jagger Double Edge Safety Razor/Dollar Shave Club multi-blade
Derby/CVS double edge blades

Yep, I put a 3/8" guard on, cut as much of it myself as I can, then let the wife do the trimming and the back of my neck.

That's pretty much what I do minus the wife

No skullet, but my hair thinned a bunch on the top. It's fine short, but anything much longer and it's very wispy. The only annoying part is the crown of the head.

Been shaving my head since 2002 and mostly use a Proglide though in a pinch an electric is OK.

I do not hire a Venezuelan to give me a Brazilian (Colbert)...

There's a mens grooming place in, of all places, Park City Utah, that goes by the name of, "Back, Crack and Sack"

I really want to try Proraso. Your setup is very similar to mine:

I'm currently using
Col Conk Bay Rum Glycerine shave soap
Merkur Model 180 safety razor
Feather blades
Van Der Hagen Badger brush

You don't tear your head up with the DE?

I've been meaning to try the Feather blades, but I have a lifetime supply of Derby's at the moment.

With the DE it is all about the angle, short strokes, and taking your time. Start flat and lift the handle until you get the blade to make contact. You then adjust as needed until you get a close shave. I tore myself up pretty good the first few times. It definitely takes practice.

I use the DE on weekends, and enjoy the process. I would go so far as to say it is a meditation.

I'll be jumping into shaving my head in November. Figured I'd mess with people by going with the Heisenburg look. I'm just not liking that people are saying to stay away from the Headblade as I bought one.

I got mine done at a ghetto motorcycle gang barber shop.
