Same thing here. I have my wife just put whatever guard on and go to town. Screw sitting in the chair for a hair cut all the time. Plus the $ savings.

I just get a high and tight every few months. I once shaved my head with no attachment on the clippers and was told I look decent, perhaps I should try a razor.

I shave with a Gillette Mach 3. I start out with a fresh new blade, but use it for months on end. The reason I don't change the blade is because it won't cut my head. I've shaved off chunks of skin when I use a brand new razor. The duller blade still shaves, but won't cut off chunks. Sure you have to go over the area a few times, but it's still better than a cleanly shaved piece of skin off of your head. And I can do my head in less than 10 mins anyway.

I tried Mach3-ing my head once with a few millimeters of growth. Holy shit, I gave up three or four strokes in and used up the entire blade's "blade change" notice strip.

Using hair clippers and a 000 blade takes just under 10 minutes. It'd be even faster now if the blade didn't get hot during the summer with 5 minutes of continuous running. I switch to a second clipper for final clean-up meaning an extra minute of swapping and oiling.

I shaved my head for a few years while I lived in south Florida. I loved it. Looked good enough, but now I've grown it back as I feel it's more professional appearing to have my hair. I do miss it, though, and often feel tempted to go back. The convenience was just so awesome - do it yourself, in only a few minutes, showers were shorter afterward, getting ready was shorter.. it was great.

OK you guys have sold me.

I'll make one last trip to the barber this week to get it shaved down to a #1. I'll let my noodle get some sun for a week or two and then shave it clean. I'll do it on a friday night so I'll have time to stop any hemorrhaging before work on Monday

I don't shave my head but I do #1 all around and trim.....for past 15 years. I hate hair dues /maintaining hair.

Get yourself a nice clipper set (not Walmart one).

Oster is good......

Yep, I put a 3/8" guard on, cut as much of it myself as I can, then let the wife do the trimming and the back of my neck.

High and tight until hairline receeded. Tried to grow it out and make the best of it. My bro called me krusty the klown. Shaved it bald with a headblade. Best decision ever.

I use the mirror to mirror method and have learned to do it right, but still like to have my wife check etc.

3/8" guard all around and sometimes I do little fade on the bottom of the trim (if I have time, usually I just trim with a nice Wahl T Trimmer/Barber kind < not crappy Walmart kind).

OP, if you go with DYI method INVEST in good gear. Clippers under $50 bucks or so will NOT do the trick (long term).

Oster Fast Feed is a good starting point....

One might be able to get a Fast Feed for just under $50.

Otherwise, check out the Andis BGRC. It's $115-ish on Amazon. Freaking amazing clipper. Cuts closer and more thoroughly than the Fast Feed. Since I shave to #000 and am actually bald, it matters. If you want to save money, Fast Feed is perfectly fine.

There's also the Classic 76 for about $150, which cuts hair amazingly. Problem is that it's higher maintenance.
