I stumbled upon a real good deal today. I had a gamestop +50% trade in coupon and bought 3 160gb ps3's for $200 from a pawnshop. Gamestop gave me $410 in trade credit for those 3 systems.

I already had $110 in credit at gamestop so I've got $520 in credit for gamestop right now, plus I have my 160gb PS3 at the house still to play until launch.

I figure if anything I will buy GTA5 and NBA 2K14 on the PS3 then see what happens with the systems when they launch. See if I can hold off on buying a new system or not when they first drop.

I'll wait and see how things go before I toss a perfectly good console in the trash and pay $600 or so for "updated" versions of the same old games(Ghosts/Black Ops, Forza, Madden, EA games, etc.).

Who said anything about having to throw your console in the trash?

Idk about you, but I'm buying the PS4 and still playing some more recent PS3 games

Waiting is always the smartest move.

Even thought the potential hardware problems should be minimal, these are much more sophisticated OS/ecosystems, and there will inevitably be some hiccups technically with them.

But much more than that, with such a competitive start (how many years has it been since we saw a near-simultaneous launch?) and a depressed economy (YoY game sales have been tanking already) combined with low-end hardware compared to 360/PS3 respective to that era, we will almost certainly see price drops within 12 months. Combine that with new SKU features, bug fixes, larger libraries, $19.99 older titles by that time, and so on, and you have a recipe for the smart people just skipping them altogether for this season.

Sure some people won't be able to resist the lure, but unless you just *HAVE* to have a new console, by next Christmas we should see $299 bundles along with MUCH MUCH better libraries.

I'm not counting on whole lot of price cuts. The 360 w/hdd debuted at $400. Right now a 360/w hdd is $300. That's a $100 price cut in how many years?

Exactly, you'll get a free game with it long before you see a $100 price drop

Grand Theft Auto...
There are no launch titles that would make me have to buy the system. No backwards compatibility on the PS4 means my ps3 will still be rocking for a while.. My launch Fat system needs to last just a bit longer!

THIS! GTAV and all my PS+ titles I'm still working through, along with Destiny not releasing until next year..I'm going to hold off.

I just bought a PS3 last week, lol. Have a backlog to get through before bothering with the new consoles.

I had a 360 a couple months after launch, and a Wii a few days after launch. Getting the 360 that early was totally pointless. There were only crappy games. Thinking of desperately finding passable games for $50-$60 for my expensive new console makes me sick. Then the 360 ended up dying a few years later.

The Wii was even worse. I just wanted to play the new Zelda game. After that there was only garbage, worse quality garbage than the 360's garbage.

Both cases I ended up using the new consoles almost exclusively to play previous-gen games through backwards compatibility, until some decent games started coming out. The Xbone and PS4 don't even have backwards compatibility.

So better to wait until there are decent libraries unless there is some OMG must have game, which there isn't as far as I am aware.

That would make sense if this gen was anything like last gen.

Last gen :

Better economy
Major sales seriously ramped up after HDD variants fell to $299 (September '08 for 360)
Competitor to 360 1 year late
Competitor to 360 priced dramatically higher at launch
Competitor to 360 priced dramatically higher for years afterward
Very expensive consoles to manufacture at start and first few years

None of those elements are at play any more. All of them made price cuts for 360/PS3 difficult to justify. After all, why cut 360 pricing when the competition is already a lot pricier? Well, the makers did find out that hitting the $299 mark steadily increased console sales, so they did learn that lesson then.

If sales remain brisk in Q1 through Q4 '14, and neither company has slid to a recognizable 2nd place status, then we may not see price cuts. However, the name of the game, just like 'razors and blades' is to get the things in homes so that the revenue taps open up. They make more money selling 10,000,000 Xbox Ones at $299 with a decent attachment rate and XBL service than they do selling 5,000,000 Xbox Ones at $499. Or an another analogy, you can only skin a sheep once, but you can shear him many times.

This generation is dramatically different than most anyone is used to seeing. And once the boardroom guys see sales slipping for their console vs. the competition, the inevitable conclusion in combination with the cheap cost of manufacturing these things will be to price drop or otherwise add value. Head to head out of the gate with a multi-billion dollar market at stake, everything will be pulled out of the hat to not fall behind.

It's going to be a glorious time to be a gamer.

I probably will.

Although, if you think about it, the primary cost when it comes to gaming is the time you put in, and going by that, it makes sense to get the latest and greatest and game sparingly.

When considering whether to buy spend money on something, I consider how long I'll own and use it. I am much more willing to spend money on something I'll own and use daily for a long time.

If you're going to get 7+ years out of a console, I wouldn't worry too much about the money. How many electronics or things at all do you buy which you can say you'll use that long?

Let's say you bought a console for $500 and got 6 years of use of it, another person buys the same console later after the price drops to $250 and gets 3 years use out of it. The yearly cost per year of use in each case is the same, but the first guy got 3 extra years of joy from his system. I think he had the better experience of the two.

Of course this all dependent on whether you'll get the use out of it while you own it, if it has the games you want go for it. Life is too short to settle for less.

I'm going to wait at least to see how PS+ is going to be affected by the new generation.

I guess it really depends on what your into game wise. I don't play a big variety of games as it is, and the stuff I do play is all coming out before the system launches. I need to see more actual game play then the cinematic cut scene shit we have been given so far

Knowing that things like GTA 5 will be on next gen

No.

"Grand Theft Auto V (commonly shortened as GTA V) is an open world, action-adventure video game for the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360. It is being developed by Rockstar North and published by Rockstar Games, set for release on 17 September 2013. It is the first main entry in the Grand Theft Auto series since Grand Theft Auto IV released in 2008, and the fifteenth entry overall. As it is one of the last titles to release exclusively in the seventh generation of video game consoles, it is considerably anticipated."

You guys are serious? The ps4 is a mid range gaming pc with a blu ray player thrown in for $400. I don't even console game but I'm likely buying one just for the 3d blu ray capabilities and it will likely be a much better interface to stream Netflix and prime than my smart tv. That and I might play 1 or 2 games a year is enough for me to throw down the $400. Sony is really giving these away at or below cost and you're looking for a price cut? Wow.

A 3d Blu-ray player that can stream Netflix and Amazon Instant Video can be bought for $50-70.

So why pay $400 for that ?

No need to stick to current gen consoles. Lets all get Xboxones
Now that Xbox One can be anything we yell at them,
I demand it be free and backwards compatible with Playstation 3 games.

Please don't thread crap

I wonder if this will be the last year of call of duty on the ps3/xbox 360? A friend of mine asked me and I have no clue. Has anyone heard anything about when they plan to stop making current gen games?

Of those I'm only really interested in GTA5. Maybe Batman but without rocksteady I cannot get excited.

Beyond Two Souls might be a great story but after playing the last game from Quantic Dream, Heavy Rain...I was bored of the gameplay. There wasn't enough freedom. If a game is going to do QTE sequences for action and fights, it has to also have points of free roam with other things to do, like Shenmue did years ago for an example. Heavy Rain was too linear for my tastes. I liked the story and how they allowed characters to die without a game over, but the gameplay was a very dry.

I still have stack of 360/PS3 games that I paid for but haven't finished yet.

at the very least, I'm going to force myself to finish them before buying a next generation console.

haven't seen any "omg, I must play this!!" games for the new systems yet, and they're not backwards compatible, so I won't be jumping on the bandwagon... it's too bad there's no way that you could trade in a physical current-gen game for a code to download it and play it on the next gen consoles.
