I started playing it when it first came out, but had trouble finding a decent guild to play with. It was too hardcore for just me and my bro to play, so we both quit.

I am hankering to play an MMO and am looking for some current opinions on the game. Anyone still playing and have some thoughts on it ?

I'm playing, just reactivated at the end of Dec, and had quit in early June. I find it a lot more enjoyable now, but I would say it's still difficult without a guild you like. If you guys still pretty much have virgin characters try the guild NEW. Also, transfer to NA.

Two of my friends and I quit about 3 months after playing from release. Honestly, they gave us a buggy product that was filled with hacking and macroing. Though today, one of my friends who recently rerolled tells a different story. Since a huge patch a few months ago they've totally revitalized the game. Previously it would take 3 months of macroing just to get Air magic to lvl 80, now it takes a week of actual play. They've brought the grind down tremendously putting more emphasis on role play and pvp. You can check the website for all the additional features and tidbits.

After my friend rerolled he's been trying to get me to play again, but I can't. My past experience with DF left a bad taste in my mouth, despite the love I had for it's fps/pvp battle system.

I played the paid beta (that is what it was) up until they announced that you have to rebuy the game to play on the NA server despite having said the transfer would be free for those currently playing (iirc). It was the biggest grind fest I've seen in any mmo. Having join a guild, traveled all but the wolf lands, engaged in 50vs50 battles, defended castles and taken one, skilled up crafting to banded (medium armor), mined, picked "herbs", done PvE for various drops, run screaming away from a massive flying fire breathing dragon, been killed and been killed, the game was just not worth buying again.

Perhaps with the large patch when NA went live and the balancing/tweaks/fixing/additional content that followed (hopefully) the game is now worth playing, but it'll be a long time before I bother to get around to trying it again. And I was the one all hyped up about this game, and made the post before release about what content the game makers had hoped to have in the game.

Darkfall is big grind is all you need to know. I played the game 2 months and frankly if I have to kill another goblin again am going to puke.

Bump. I tried the free trial this past weekend, and I had fun. Got ganked only once by some uber guy, but played a good 4 hours otherwise without trouble. The UI takes awhile to get used to and changing from mage to weapon is tedious, but the game looked like fun from what I seen.

Anybody here still play?

My experience of Darkfall Online is when I was involved with it's late stages of beta just before release and I remember spending hours literally just running around. After running for maybe 4 hours through empty wasteland we finally find a mob to farm and sit there grinding for a while trying to get staves to train mage skills on. Then one day we decide to fight pvp and find another group to fight with but it ended up just being running running running for 95% of the time and 5% combat.

It was such a horrible gaming experience I will never try it again

Shadowbane IMO was 100x better and shadowbane wasn't that great. UO still hold the title for me in terms of most fun pvp game (should specify back when UO was in it's prime - pre-Tamriel)

Darkfall should have been great ... but I too quit after a few months. It was a shame, it was one of the few games I really followed from alpha to release.

It is actually a lot better now. It's more populated, has more mob camps, better balanced and faster to level. They also seem to be completely rebuilding the engine piece by piece with every patch. That said, for everyone that's on the fence or didn't like it initially, I would still wait until their fabled "Darkfall 2010" patch comes out which should give the real PvP improvements the game needs.

was any body ever rocking this game?

I remember people calling this the most badass hardcore pvp game ever made....this was before the game actually came out.

Then...nothing.

The game that was so hardcore, it was a mini-game leveling system just to BUY the game!

It was kinda ok at the start, the rush to get your city built up, gathering gold/resources was a must, but there where so many bug's/glitches at the start it lead to a rather unablanced game where the guilds that knew how to exploit/glitch just got so much richer than the rest that the danger of them losing their gear started to die...great concept, too many bugs i'd say is what killed it, the rush of having to defend something you put months into creating as a guild was good though...until you realized how badly some cheated

The game was a complete grindfest and being that it was a skill based grindfest it end up being a macro ridden MMO. This isn't even mentioning the hostile and anti-social types who flocked to this DF and also cheated their ass off.

Incoming wall of text. Here's what a friend had to say about the current state of the game:

I'll weigh in as a person that is currently playing Darkfall. Here are some facts:

1. The siege system is 100% improved, but still needs some work.
2. The grind is comparable to other games now. Take that was you will.
3. Darkfall even with all it's faults still has the best PvP of any MMO by far.
4. Now that a good portion of the population is reaching the 'end game', AV is scrambling to add 'end game' type content.
5. Magic is still king, but it is very close to balanced with melee with the addition of splash damage and buffed resists on heavy armor.
6. The cost of grinding is balanced now. You can actually farm in small groups or solo and it will be worth your time.
7. You can now farm in large groups and it be very worth your time. Example killing the Yssam dragon (they added a real one), yielded about 175k worth of loot between 8 people. If you recall back in the day, it took 5 people to kill thainliches which dropped 80 gold each.
8. Offline skilling is being patched in tomorrow along with anti-swimmer defense for ships, which makes ships an actual threat now.
9. War Dec mechanics are being adjusted in many ways to close loop holes. Some are getting patched in tomorrow.
10. Siege exploits using 1 man proxy clans to avoid property loss and other consequences is being addressed. (bye bye Rerolled LOL clan )
11. Regional banking crowd is winning and that will be coming soon.
12. Banks will be upgradable so enemies can't use them in your own city. I think that might be in tomorrow's patch.
13. They have admitted (finally) that the alignment system is broken. They are currently working on fixing loop holes that allow alignment farming and ways to make being blue a good thing.
14. They are still working on adding racial specific skills to actually make them different. Basically, they are still trying to get 4-leg run in the game, but are trying to create something equally cool for each races.
15. If/When they fix the alignment system and faction systems, they will offer a race change option.
16. They added rare ore to regular nodes, so people without a mine can still get good armor and weapons.

DF2010 (or whatever it will be renamed) will truly change the game. Right now, everyone basically plays a hybrid class. With all the different good spells and skill spread out across multiple schools and skills, it forces you to have them all to compete. That is why the grind is so horrible. You basically need all your skills maxed out, currently. All that stuff above is great, but DF2010 is really what most of us are waiting on. DF2010 is basically going to change the game a good bit. DF will become a load out system. There will be prestige classes which I assume will block some skills (reducing the grind even more) and open up a few class specific ones. It will add play style specific armor, again load out style speccing. If done even close to right, DF will be worth playing again. It will add in a completely new UI, which is a HUGE problem with the current game. I don't know why but simply closing the chat window boosts my FPS by 120. They are completely upgrading all the graphics and sounds in DF2010 to support DX11. All the numbered stuff and the stuff in this paragraph, I expect to be done before or in the DF2010 xpac.

Conclusion:

If you want to play, I'm sure some of us can find you a place to live and will be more than happy to help you out. We have the knowledge to actually help get you up to fighting level as fast as possible now, but there is a flip side to that. DF2010 will change everything it seems and you might do a good bit of grinding for stuff you might end up never using again. That's my main worry. I just finished my character. I literally have 100 in every magic school with 75+ in every useful offensive spell. I have 100/100 great sword. I have 75+ in every attribute and capped in some. When DF 2010 comes out and if there is a paladin type PC, I'm sure it will require me to block about 75% of my magic skills and schools I grinded out. So, you can see why I said you might want to wait, so you don't waste time. If you want to come back and play as a destroyer/mage killer that will basically guarantee you don't grind anything you don't need or spend anymore than you need to, but you won't be as effective in solo fights as a hybrid. You will rape in large fights, though. The game is fun and REAL fixes are coming. As far as Virakar reforming and getting that much interest, I wouldn't even try to convince anyone to do that until DF2010. If it is half what they say, you won't need to convince them to play.

Here is a video of good players being destroyers. This is even before the magic splash damage/armor rebalance and most of the changes that have happened. It still represents modern DF combat pretty well.

I realize a lot of that can lack context for many people, but I think anyone who tried the game at one point will get what they needed out of that.

Love that there's only 1 server and everyone can create only 1 character per account. Seriously, i think that's badass.
