Just curious if anyone's doing it, and how well it works.

I've been on the fence about buying a PS4 lately when my boyfriend suggested that for all the PC gaming I do, I may as well just get something like a Steam Link or Nvidia Shield to use for when I want to game but don't feel like sitting at my desktop, and instead of a PS4 using the money to upgrade my video card (which is like 4 years old, a Radeon 6950).... presumably I'd be using either the Link or Shield with an XBox 360 controller or wireless keyboard/mouse (if that's supported by the Shield)

my primary games are stuff like Diablo, Fallout, Skyrim, and MMO's (or slower stuff like Civ 5 or The Sims when I want to relax), not FPS's or racing games if that factors in.

the distance between my home office and living room is too big to run an HDMI cable across the floor (and we rent, so no running cables through the wall), but we do have an AC router and could probably get a wired connection in the living room via MOCA (my desktop is already wired up to the router)

Not until I get a TV that does at least 1920x1200.

Was hoping to get a 4K television this holiday season but thats probably not happening. Its much more likely I'll buy a larger monitor for my gaming system.

If you get the Steam Link please let us know how it works out.

I have been using the Steam streaming feature for awhile now with pretty good results. I have my old i5-750 setup as the streaming receiver and just run Steam in big picture mode. It works remarkably well even over a WiFi connection, although most of the games I play on my TV are less than demanding (Spelunky, Super Meat Boy, etc.).

My 55" TV is my monitor.

I streamed games from my 70 inch TV which was my monitor to my projector. Now, my main gaming rig is hooked up to my projector, and I don't have my TV right now. No real reason to stream anymore.

But OP, I played ALL of Borderlands TPS through streaming, and other games too. I liked it personally, I even played Dota 2 through a stream in my house. It's definitely nice!

It needed to be wired for me personally though.

I'm going for a Korean Import Monitor. The largest one I can buy with Freesync. You can try the Wasabi UHD420 or the AMH409U or the B420 from Microboard. I think those 3 are all good picks.

I think that's a better/more flexible than a TV, since you still have display port for PC gaming for videocards that don't have HDMI2.0.... (AMD.....)

I have done the over network streaming for our laptop. Streamed from my main rig to it over WiFi and it worked fine. Played Batman, Spintires, and a few others that way.

Yes, it's got me thinking now that with UNRAID 6 supporting VMs, I could setup windows VMs with my old GPUs and use them as game casting stations. Which makes Zen interesting if they deliver on large corecount CPUs with hyper threading.

I've been using Steam in-home streaming a bit. It was completely un-playable even at 720p low quality over 5GHz WiFi N. I purchased a 100' network cable and ran it along the ceiling for gigabit LAN and streaming now works happily at 1080p "balanced" settings.

steam link says it needs around 30mb/s and recommends wired connection, although ac should be fine

Been trying it out a bit this week. Works quite well for the most part. Had it on auto bitrate, and it looked a bit washed down at times. Biggest issue though, my Sony LED LCD I was streaming to looks like ballsack compared to the plasma.
