I'm squeemish to use them as well but I've noticed that for a bunch of my hardware, the WU site posts the same drivers as my manufacturers website within a week or two.

These drivers have been bad news for me.
They messed up the sound on two of my machines (SoundBlaster Live Value and SoundBlaster Live Platinum) and the video on one. (ATI Radeon 64DDR)
EDIT: Make that three machines for the sound. It also messed up one with just the onboard AC97 or whatever that is.
I have had to get rid of these drivers to go back to what I had.

It thinks I have a Logitech mouse when in fact I have a Microsoft Mouse.
It has also misidentified one of my video cards.

I tried using WU to update my ATI TV Tuner. It installed but then my ATI TV would take forever to load and change channels. Did the driver rollback and it wokred correctly again. Stay away from driver updates on WU.

Everything you can update BUT updates to the mobo, video card, sound card (get them off somewhere else). NIC drivers, modem drivers, they're OK.

Nova101, thanks for the suggestion of installing the Intel drivers over the WU Intel update. I just did that and my primary/secondary drive controllers lost the "!" and my hard drive once again shows up in Device Mgr. Along w/ that I can once again set the DMA option on my hard drive. Thanks again for the suggestion!!!

Paulson, that's a lesson I learned the hard way. Thankfully the Intel chipset update made the problem go away.

The Cmedia drivers refused to install, and screwed up the installation that already existed.

My 3com NIC drivers screwed up everything, requiring me to set back my registery, and then reinstalling.

ATI drivers didn't even work, just went to 640 res.

was gonna post this, but decided to search first. glad i did
thanks for this discussion, i had this problem on dell work computer (98se) compaq (98se) and next door cube neighbor had it today also (dell). solved it(?) by choosing the standard ESDI hard disk drivers in windows. exclamation points all gone and cdrom drives etc. recognized. there ought to be a law or something against this type of stuff. it is misleading as all get out when it says *haughty voice* "windows is determining the updates for your computer. please wait." ugh microsoftheaded

And these are the guys (MS) that want us to trust our data w/ them, re their dot net strategy. I think not! Many of you have probably noticed that the Intel driver update is no longer on the MS Update site. Isn't it satisfying to know we're beta testing files for MS?

Yep. I'll jump on the bandwagon with my sad tale: I (stupidly) updated my Dell notebook's modem drivers and the connect speed dropped by 80%.

The only drivers I've ever used from the WU site was for my NIC's after doing a fresh, shiny install of XP. I've never installed manufacturers drivers for my NIC's since I moved all my PC's to XP. I've always used the XP provided NIC drivers and have had absolutely no problem with them.

That being said, I would NOT use WU video or sound drivers just because that scares the crap out of me! But for the NIC's, so far so good.

I have only had headaches from using those "updated" drivers from Windows Update. The only thing I can think is that they want it crash so us techs can make money or they are slowly trying to piece together some kind of trojan with the sent drivers and security updates.

Anyone else think that those drivers had stopped being offered? I must of been more up on updating my previous loads because I hadn't seen a driver offered there for anyones computer I have worked on until just recently. Now I almost everyone I update has "new" drivers available.

Lock me up, I am starting to sound Paranoid............

<< I download most of the stuff except for the drivers. I get the new drivers straight from the manufacturers websites. I've tried the Microsoft drivers before and they didn't fair that well at all. >>

I trust them. Then again I also trust unofficial beta release drivers and custom drivers.
