Any idea what is causing this: MOBO-CPU-Fan? I need to know before I call NewEgg because they have a 7 day policy on CPU RMA.

Maybe you have the wrong settings for fan control? What happens if you disable fan control in the bios?

Arrrrgh While it will support dual displays, it won't support dual "analog" displays. Since this MSI board is lacking the DVI-I interface onboard, it essentially makes this paticular motherboard a single display solution unless paired with a PCIe or PCI graphics card....Bummer, seems like a "big" oversite for an otherwise excellent IGP. Apparently "none" of the Xpress 200 IGP board will be able to support CRT (or analog LCD) + TV-out together?

The Pictures at NewEgg show what appears to be a Heat Sink...
but in Anand review pictures (a preview Mobo version without a doubt - dimms are all black- no Blue), one can see a fan on the North Bridge!

Thanks!

On mine, the NB is passively cooled.

They want the maximum performance that full-size users want, but they just want it in a smaller package.

Ironically, I think Athlon 64 microatx board are behind the curve of the Intel cpu boards. There are Intel boards with Gigabit Lan and OC features in Microatx format.

As for differences between this and the Foxconn MicroAtx. The Foxconn has one additional PCI-e slot in place of MSI's PCI slot. The MSI has built in SPDIF and has onboard graphics where Foxconn requires a video card. Not sure if Nforce4 is faster than ATI Express chipset. I think both are pretty close in performance.

i actually have both these boards right now, and am switching to the nvidia since i have a 6600gt (figured i might as well bought the board used for $50 at the fs/ft forum).

the foxconn (i have the firewire version) does not have as good audio outputs, and has no onboard video and has 2 less dimm slots (you cant use 4 dimm slots with ddr400 anyway so this isnt too bad).

but the foxconn is a bit faster, and has bus speed tweaks. you can go up to 250bus.

msi also has better support and documentation.

foxconn has no voltage tweaks and oddly is LOCKED at 2.5 v currently for ram. as much ddr400 ram runs at 2.6 volts this somewhat sucks. you need really good ram to o/c or you have to kick down th e multiplier. there is no cpu voltage tweak either, but i am going to solve that problem by getting a 3000 + venice when it comes out which can do 2600-2700 at default from what i've seen.

foxconn also supports ncq which can help if you have appropriate drive and has 0+1 raid , ati only has 0 or 1. ati has also really slow usb 2.0 support (not really an issue for me) and worse ATA read speeds.

Tried it 3 more times with the same results!
Witthout the fan working Temp is 55c + so far (running for 1 hour with case side up and open)

did u get it to work properly?

Yes... so far.

What I did was to go to Bios Set up, and set the : "LOAD OPTIMIZED DEFAULTS" , and that took care of it so far!

This is I think what happened: I booted EVEREST (a lousy flawed program) to check the temp of the CPU /MB and HDD (to see if I need to add a second case fan or not...); and this particular time , it must have tripped the sensors and/or the fan controls somehow, because it took a very long time for it (Everest) to return any readings... and the problem started right after that!

>>Is there a regular sized variant of this motherboard? (not micro) <<

NO... It is as good as a full ATX ... It stays cool and there are no fans on the mobo itself...works great... If one doesn't play games that much... there is no need for a GraphicCard.
It is perfect for a quiet PC.

Ahh I'm actually going for a gaming pc here though, at the moment I have an abit kt7a with a 1ghz duron... so I've been looking for an upgrade , and then I also want to be somewhat future proof - something the socket 939 platform + pci express can give me

If you have an DVI connector on the mainboard, you could use a DVItoVGA adaptor to get analog signal from the digital output (at least in theory). Too bad the MSI board with DVI output doesn't have S-Video and Composite

MSI's owners' manual for the RS480M2-IL recommends a 350-watt power supply. With the newer 90 nano CPUs though, this probably isn't as critical. A Winchester A64 3000+ and an X800XL should run fine on this board with a decent 300-watt power supply.

I can't put my money where my mouth is though, I have an Antec 350-watt TruePower power supply in my SLk1650 case.

As for this not being a gaming board (mentioned above), I believe that was said in the context of using the integrated graphic processor only. With my X800XL, this board is running Doom 3 and HL2 like a scalded cat!

Actually, you can't do that either. Xpress 200 doesn't allow for dual analog outputs no matter what your configuration without an additional graphics card. Putting the adaptor on a DVI-I port merely connects to the analog pins and is no different than using a plain VGA connector.

"If" the MSI board had a DVI-I connector onboard instead of VGA, it would allow DFP (Digital Flat Panel) + TV-out at the same time, not CRT + TV-out. This would be OK if you had a digital LCD and wanted TV-output, but wouldn't help you a bit if you wanted to use CRT or LCD with VGA (or other analog display configuration)

Apparently, it only supports a single RAMDAC and a single TMDS transmitter using just the onboard no matter what connectors the manufacturer places on the motherboard:
Multiple Display Features
SURROUNDVIEW? support for up to three monitors with an ATI discrete graphics card
Dual independent displays: CRT/LCD, TV/LCD
Support for DDCI and DDC2B+ for plug and play monitors
Support for flat panel displays via DVI
8-bit alpha blending of graphics and video overlay

Seems pretty short sighted for a value platform that promotes superior onboard graphics and Surround view features. A second RAMDAC allows for any number of configurations with dual analog displays, a single RAMDAC seriously cripples it for simple features like CRT+Theater Mode.

i heard that, RS480M2-IL has, on-board graphics, which shares 128 mb of ram.
Does it really does so ??

What directX9 says, in display tab ??

Did anyone, encountered any prob, with win2k or winXp and Linux, regarding network interface or booting/restarting ??

Okay for the experts on this board, will it support the 800HTT setting as I have a 3400+ 939 newcastle looking for a home?

May I ask something about MSI RS480?

1) Is it mobo OK with S3 (suspend on RAM mode)? Or it seems to have different that usual voltage and cpu temp after restore from s3?

2) Is there a problem with msi rs480 and aria case? I think I have seen somewhere that aria case supports specific matx mobos (the problem has to do with the PCI-EXPRESS card position on motherboard).

I just set up this board, I didn't notice until I opened the box that the Serial port is not built in. I installed the Serial port in the PCI case slot and then plugged into the MB but it isnt seen. I plugged it into the plug and the top left as noted on page 2-15 of manual.

Anyone know what I am doing wrong? or maybe have a suggestion as to hoiw to make the serial port work?

MSI has a program that you can use to monitor heat but not voltages. It is called PC Alert 4 I want to say. Used to use this board, very nice. Just didn't have all the features I was looking for in a board. But for a basic PC, VERY nice and stable.
