Your theory somewhat holds true for me, but as I've made more money I've usually had big life style changes like my first child, then my house and then my second kid. So While may Salary has doubled during those times I still save about the same amount of money, but I haven't dramatically increased spending on myself. I would say the amount of money I would spend by going out eating out/drinking, buying new clothes and electronics has maybe actually gone down just a tad, but I have added lots of other expenses like my mortgage, daycare and diapers.

being a stay-at-home person is not my thing, thus the need for nice things does not appeal for me.
the older you get, the less time you have to achieve your dreams. and if small touchy things or big boats and SUV's get in the way, then my friend, I will have to tell you that you will become a spoiled adult unless you know what's coming in the future.

measure politics ans survival skills, as well as family and friends and leadership. you can live today, but tomorrow will be another on of the busiest days of your life.

good luck

You'll probably change your tune once you get a little older. "Nice things" doesn't have to mean wasting your money on ridiculously expensive designer clothes, Porsches, etc. "Nice things" will mean vacations for you and your family, that cabin for your children near the lake, etc.

as i get older, i feel i need to have some nicer things, like clothes, apartment, furnishings. but most of my upgrades would be small to medium ticket items, like new clothes, some new furniture. nothing big, like a new car, or a $10k luxury cruise.

one thing i would really like is to be able to afford a decent sized condo. until i have that, i wont even think about getting a bmw

Heh..

In high school, the dress code forced me to wear nice jeans or khakis, always wear a belt, and always wear a collared shirt. Then, I went to UF for 6 years and pretty much never dressed up nicer than a tshirt, shorts, and sandals.. Now, I work at an engineering firm and I'm pretty much back at my high school dress code..

At least I don't have to wear a suit.. at least not for the time being.

The funny thing is I spent lot money on dress clothes for work when I wasn't making lot of money. Nice suits, ties, and shoes for work. Now I make many multiple times more and I spend virtually nothing on my clothes. My work clothes consist of $1 t-shirt and shorts from Goodwill and the crap people throw away.

I do

In college I was making 8.50 an hour and normally broke, now a couple years out I make 70k+. Got myself a new car, LCD tv, nicer clothes, and go out alot and have tons of fun.

While I do save money, dont forget that you have one life to live and you need to enjoy it. Go out, spend some money, get with some good looking women while you are young, and have a good time.

What job did you used to have, and what's your job now?

Never really spent on anything except what I needed. I'm pretty much opposed to consumerism so I don't think it would ever happen. I believe a house is a home, not a place to live or an investment, so I'm unlikely to ever buy a new one (though I do upgrade as needed). A car should be an economic means of transport, nothing more, so I'm unlikely to spend much on that. Clothes keep you from being sued for indecent exposure, so that's not gonna change. I do eat out when I'm too busy to shop and cook, but try not to all the time. About the only thing that changes when I have more money is that I try to upgade everything that's been aging, like getting a new computer. Other than that it all gets saved.

I think everyone buys nicer things as their salary increases, not just those under thirty.

When I was poor I wanted stuff, but couldn't afford it. Then I made more money and bought what I wanted. I wouldn't say I had less money in my pocket, but I didn't save every penny I could. I mean what is the point, if you can't reward yourself for doing well, why do well?

There's a reason why economists call a good whose consumption increases with income a NORMAL good.

If you feel it's appropriate to suck off your boss because he's paying you enough, go ahead. I on the other hand do what I'm required by the job specification. If someone asks me to wear a monkey suit, that's the last request they will ever get to make. If you're willing to bend over for the company at your inconvenience, I pity you, and I congratulate your company. They've found themselves a well trained monkey.

As for the initial question, the niceness of my things has remained pretty constant with my increasing income. In fact I'm spending less than ever because I already have most of the things I want.

For all your self-professed intellect, you sure missed the simple point of the post you quoted.

I would imagine I'm not following your standards. 3 years our of college been making 60K+ since getting out, live in a 90K house I purchased, own a 20K truck I purchased, and don't really own any more fancy clothing than the one suit I got as a birthday present for interviews. The only other thing I really want to own is a 1972 blazer, other than that, there is nothing more I need.

As I make more money, I save more money and pay off more mortgage stuff... and save money for my kid's education.
