Anyone upgraded from P4 3.0 or lower to Athlon 64 3800+ or similar here?

Do you mean althon 64 3800+? There is no such thing as an althon xp 3800+, 3200+ was end of the line.

From 3ghz to 3.8ghz = 27%~ improvement. Unless what you do is computationally intensive (i.e. any repeatitive task that isnt bottlenecked by CPU, like encoding AV), your unlikely to see the benefits.

i have 2 machines a 2.26p4 @ 2.7ghz, and this athlon64 oced to around 3900+(if there was such cpu) speed. the p4 seems very sluggish compared to this pc

I didn't come from a Pentium system, but my last system was an Athlon XP 2200+ and I moved to an Athlon64 3500+. The difference for gaming is night and day.

If you're going to overclock, make sure to get one with the Winchester core and the 90 nanometer process. They're (extremely) slightly outperformed at the factory clock speeds by the same Newcastle core-equipped A64s with the 0.13 micron process, but they overclock better.

I upgraded from a P4 3ghz 800fsb system to an Athlon 64 3200+/939 rig OCed to 2600mhz... being conservative, id say I gained 25% across the board.

I upgraded from a 3.0E to an Athlon 64 3500+ and really didnt notice a lot of difference
