I use one, but most of the time I wake up before it goes off.

I hate when that happens, wake up automatically, check the time, it's like :59. Then there's a sudden suspense knowing it's going to go off any time, but still too tired to physically get up and just turn it off before it goes off. Then fall back asleep right as it goes off. It's rare that happens though.

My cell phones don't come into the bedroom. If someone really needs me, they can call the house phone and wake me up.

Wait...you mention cell phone, which I get, but what is this house phone you speak of?

Yep.

I've been using this same alarm clock since 1987. I will not abandon this trooper, no sir.

Ha - mine isn't quite as old but I have used the same alarm clock for the last 20 years or so. I almost lost my shit when I thought one of the buttons broke. Fortunately it just needed to be snapped back in place

back in the olden days we had land lines and that was called the house phone because you couldn't take it with you.
go back far enough and you had handsets that were tethered to the phone with a cord!
Some even had dials, so if you had to dial 0, you had to rotate it all the way over and then wait for it to rotate back before dialing another number!

now get off my lawn you young whippersnapper!

Alarm clock. I need to have to get up to fiddle with my alarm, or I'm likely to fall asleep again and oversleep.

I used my computer as my alarm in college. Wrote my own alarm beep program, and set a scheduled task. Worked great on pre-NT Windows. But since then it seems like the system speaker has gotten harder to access - and often it seems to be missing entirely. And I couldn't rely on speakers that could be turned off.

Ahh good ol pulse dialing. Back when the pulses were actually handled mechanically.

The current switches still support it, but it's all digital now other than mechanical relays for off hook, ringing etc. (like same type you'd see in a UPS or other electrical item)

Ahh yes system speaker programming that is fun. My C++ class in college used to think I was a huge nerd. I always had to 1 up everyone and use stuff like the system speaker. Was fun when we had to write a battleship game.

I occasionally use my 25 year old seiko chronograph watch. It has a decently loud alarm.

I think the fact that you are a huge nerd probably played a role in that, you know?

I use my cell. I stopped using the clock cause I always misplace the remote(thanks kitty), and that means I have to get up to turn it off or snooze it. I don't appreciate being forced out of bed to make noise stop.

That's the whole point of having an alarm clock.

Eventually, but there's some leeway. Sometimes I want to stay in bed a bit longer, but a machine screaming at me makes that unpleasant.

I'm usually up before the alarm anyway. I sleep with the radio on, and listen to it when I wake up. When Morning Edition plays their long form song(~5:08am), my alarm will go off 2 minutes later. That's assuming I didn't switch to the classical station before I fell asleep. BBC America comes on at midnight, and I don't like hearing that.

My alarm clock battery lasts like a year. One rechargeable AAA. Makes a pretty good primary. I turn my cell phone off like 90% of the time.

Alarm clock as primary.
Cellphone as secondary.
Timer on lamp to turn it on.

I dislike going to sleep in the first place (medical science still hasn't cured sleep, dammit), but I dislike waking up even more, and can apparently go to considerable lengths to disable things that try to wake me up.

Yes because I wake up to the radio and you know all about phones and their finicky FM chip status. Plus my alarm clock has killer built-in speakers my phone only wishes it had.

Interesting, I always thought it would be neat if phones have a built in FM/AM radio, so they do, but they just turn it off so they can make more profit. Stupid.

Wonder what it involves to enable it. Could be something as simple as breaking a solder joint or something. I'll have to read up more on that.

Time projects to the ceiling about 75°, no need to turn my head to check the time. Alarm set at 3:15 am.
