I have a Alpha ev6 that I cant seem to get rid of so I am thinking abot setting up a Seti machine for it. Does anyone know where I could find a board for this CPU?
I don't know if you can buy the motherboard by itself, but maybe over here?. I'm too tired (pullin' another all-nighter) to search the rest of the site, but they sell alpha based systems, so it's a starting place.
I'm running SETI on an alpha DPW 433au (433Mhz 21164 alpha). What's the Mhz of the CPU? (heh... hint). Although my mobo (Miata EV5.5) might not take your CPU.
Here's a couple of places that cater to the elite alpha crowd... :
Its a 21264 EV6 500mhz unit. I seem to find info on the 21164 but nothing on the 21264. Here goes a picture
I guess the 21164 is for workstations and the 21264 for designed for servers.
Deschamps - That's a cool photo!! I never did take mine apart to look at it. Just loaded up linux and let it run.
The 21264 that you have is the newer version of the CPU as compared to my 21164 (sortof like how intel went from PIIs to PIIIs). Both are usable in servers or workstations - where the server boards tend to be 2 or 4-way (or more) rather than single like the workstation.
Since yours is a current CPU, there will probably be alot less available out there in the used/refurbished market, but maybe you'll still find something from that pile of links.
I found out the hard way last spring when I bought mine that it was hard as hell to find info on alpha parts as you've discovered!
long story short, EV6 has OoO processing, more functional units, a faster FSB and memory bus, no longer has ondie L2 (much much larger L1 though), and other groovy stuff. Don't think P3 over P2. Think Athlon over K6. :Q
