ya, it's amazing how easy it is to load up on fat and sugar these days, but never get enough protein.

And especially salt. I don't think I've had a single day where I wasn't over my recommended sodium intake.

i guess i am gonna need to get some protein supplement

MORE PROTEIN MOM!

I started using it, but eventually learned what I needed to do. 110 lbs down.

I will give this a try for the next 30 days to see if i lose any weight. Never really tracked what I eat, so this may be an eye opener.

Be prepared to be shocked! I was/am still constantly surprised at the number of calories that are in simple things...as well as the fat content in various foods that I had always considered to be "low fat" or "low calorie."

Fuck...I max out my sodium intake pretty quickly...without ever telling the app how much salt I add to my food...:whiste:

In the past I have counted calories. It works but it's time consuming. There are easier ways to lose weight, but counting calories works, it is pretty much guaranteed to work as long as you stay healthy.

Even if you don't track every little calorie, apps like this can be great at opening your eyes to trouble spots in your diet. I try to eat healthy, but some days it can be like "damn, 50% of the fat I got today was from that 1/4 cup of ranch dressing!"

Tiny adjustments like realizing you can have a big impact on your whole day just by cutting your ranch dressing in half. 1/8 cup is just fine for my grilled chicken salad, and it knocked out a lot of fat calories.
When I put dressing on my salads (which are meals in themselves), I spoon out less than that, closer to 1 tablespoon. I'm keenly aware that this in itself is nearly 100 "empty" calories.

Does myfitnesspal take step count/running info or is it just focused on diet?

It allows you to track exercise as well. In addition to the iOS app utilizing the M7 chip in the 5s to track steps, you can link to third party devices (e.g. FitBit) to track steps as well. You can also link to third-party applications (e.g. MapMyFitness, Runkeeper, etc) to automatically upload exercise.

Do you consider olive oil to be "empty" calories?

Ah cool. I'll have to look into some 3rd party apps to see which work best with this.

Not so much as mayo, which is ~1/2 of what I put in my homemade thousand island dressing. Actually, a tablespoon of that probably has closer to 55 calories, guessing. I do use olive oil exclusively in my kitchen. It's more healthy than most kitchen oils, granted, however I'd still call it empty calories compared to most foods. I do believe, however, that it's a healthful part of my diet, it just doesn't contribute any of things I need like protein, vitamins, minerals, omega3 fatty acids.

I've considered shopping for mayo made with olive oil. I think I once looked for this recently in a grocery and was discouraged, maybe by the high prices.

I'm not sure this myfitnesspal would work well for a person like me. Not much of what I eat has a barcode involved. I eat not much processed food, for instance. I buy stuff in bulk and that has barcodes, but figuring out the calorie count of what I eat would probably involve a lot of arithmetic on my part, not passing something in front of my smartphone.

Alright. One more question given the above...do you consider french fries to be empty calories?

The MyFitnessPal database actually as a lot of foods from the USDA Nutrient Database...you just have to know how to search it correctly, with the correct inputs. I've been using it for about 2 years and haven't used the barcode scanner more than 5 or 6 times.

A guy on another board that I read was approaching 400 pounds. He insisted that his body didn't work the same was as others, that diets did not work for him, that he must have a thyroid/hereditary/whatever problem and that was why he was fat. After listening to everyone explaining to him that he was wrong for long enough, he finally agreed to join myfitnesspal and log all his calories.

A year later, he was down 150 pounds. Two years later, he's been hovering near his target weight for a while.

It works, and you can do it also. Be honest with yourself and log everything. You don't have to starve yourself or deprive yourself of everything good, just try to keep your weekly calorie average near your target. Good luck!
