What I don't like is the UAC. MS thinks that it is better to ask for someone to click OK three times to make a change rather than just asking a user one time per change for his/her password.

I disabled UAC within minutes of installing vista, and bugged the hell out of me. After that it pretty much behaves like XP as far as noticible security settings.

1) You're asked one time for each change that requires admin privileges, not three.
2) It's designed that way to prevent a rogue process from performing tasks that require administrative privileges. Not saying that malware writers won't find a way around it, but that's what it's designed for. Besides, UNIX and Linux admins have known this for years - you don't stay logged in with root privileges (administrator-level privileges in Windows) unless you specifically need them. UAC allows you to be a "normal user" until you need those privileges.
3) UAC's also great for those of us who have to administer users' PCs. We don't have to ask users to log off so we can log in as administrator to do something... we simply put in our credentials, do whatever we need to do, and let the user continue to work, all without having to log off.

If you don't like UAC, you can simply turn it off. But I've found after using it for a few months that it's *really* not that bad, considering how many times you have to get into something that requires admin privileges.

i used it for a while, and my overall performance got sluggish compared to xp. my moms stock trading program kept freezing in vista (fidelity stock trader pro) so she couldnt handle it.

im back to xp, where i can overclock my video card, install any program/game without slowdown.

but we're sticking with XP until Vista has SP1.

I've been using it on my laptop since it was released (Latitude D600), and haven't looked back. Writing one of my 75 page final reports in Office 2k7 was a treat... the new charts and visual styles really are awesome. Overall, it has been very stable and just as fast as XP.

EDIT: UAC is a pain in the ass, so I disabled it. However, as a network administrator, I think it is a great feature that will definitely be used within my organization.

For some reason my display settings revert to 640x480 on every restart and I have to change them back always.

Yeah that's what I'm guessing since my Aero features disappeared too.

Any suggestions on getting a driver for a GeForce 4 Ti4200
I need Aero!

Been using it since its (RTM) release. I'm missing quite a few drivers, and HP hasn't released their laptop drivers yet. :| I'm also having a problem with the OS freezing when coming out of stand-by.

I've got vista running on my laptop and my desktop. I'm still running into a few problems here and there, but overall I'm happy.

I am running Vista RTM from MSDN on my main home desktop, my work desktop and my laptop.

Overall happy... only found 1 problem with Soundblaster Live Gamers (no driver)

Extremely stable, however would definitely appreciate a better hardware than what I am currently running it on

I thought you needed a DX9 card for Aero. GF4 is DX8. That might be the problem unless you're saying you've already had Aero running, then I don't know

I've been playing with a, um, "preview" edition of Vista Ultimate RTM - after a week my feeling is that it looks great but the driver support sucks and a lot of programs either officially don't work yet (like Nero 7), or seem to crash a lot (like the ICQ client). Overall it's very promising, but still feels kinda beta.

Oh yeah, it's cake to get past the activation.

I've had Office 2007 for months, but I'm not hot. At all.

Outlook 2007 is buggy as hell. It's slow and just plain unusable:

Bullsh*t. I've been running it for two months. Granted, it doesn't have the "wow" factor that the rest of the Office upgrade has, but it runs just fine. Did you actually install it and use it? Or did you just do a quick Google search for something negative to post?

Have had RTM running here for a month or so, dual-boot on my main dev box with XP. Vista is a slick piece of work, even more so from the perspective of a Windows software developer. Cool stuff in there for us. As for the general user Vista experience: the install was faster and required less interaction with the user than ever before; the system came right up and installed all my hardware out of the box - even natively supported my TV Wonder card; figured out the XP dual boot setup without my help; Aero is good looking, and what's more important, since the UI runs on top of Direct3D now the whole thing is smoother and more responsive, with less screen flicker when dragging large windows around (I run at 1920 x 1200 on a X2 4400 with 7600GT and 2 gigs); I am sort of iffy on the new start menu - not sure yet; the flip-3D thing... neat but not all that useful to me; active preview thumbnails on the start bar... neat again, sort of useful, I don't get lost in Windows, so whatever; UAC... turned it off; Explorer is slicker in a lot of ways. The thing I really appreciate though is stability and responsiveness. The system just feels snappier than XP, in booting, using, and shutting down.

Oh, and I like the sounds .

You need a Dx9 card for Aero Glass only. Any old card can run regular Aero.

Yep, on Office 2007 here since it was released to MSDN - not had any issues at all and use it about 14 hours a day, 7 days a week with Exchange 2003 SP2
