Anyone use Time Warner and BYO Modem?

Got the notification over the weekend that they are raising their "rental" fee a few bucks so I'm looking into just getting my own cable modem. Just not sure if an older model is "good enough" or if there's a reason to spend more for a fancier modem. I don't know if I need OSIS 3 or if I'd be fine with DOCSIS 2. Things like that.

SB5101 - cheaper but DOCSIS 2
Sb6121 /Sb6141 - more expensive but DOCSIS 3

Anyone know more about this stuff or have any recommendations? Just looking for something cheap that lets me keep my decent speeds.

I forgot to mention that I still have to check what modem I have now as I don't have the faintest idea what it is. I'll check that first and use that as a starting point.

I have saved probably $150 to $200 by using my own modem for the past several years

If providing your own modem you should also provide your own router even if you only have one computer because it helps protect against online attacks.

Look for a sale on the dosis 3.0 modems because 2.0 modems are on the list of will not be supported much longer lists of many cable companies.

Here is a list of modems TW should support.

https://www.timewarnercable.com/en/residential-home/support/topics/internet/buy-your-modem.html

You could save money in the long run but may have a harder time getting support if you don't rent their modem.

I'd do the research and get a 3rd party modem again. It's almost time to upgrade to a docsis 3.0 modem.

Yeah, I have my own everything past the modem. The modem is just a modem, not a modem/router.

I've never been a huge fan of ISP-provided modems. I always seem to have more problems with them than not. I'm on Comcast, but my first modem looked like an old U.S. Robotics 56k modem from the early nineties! I kept having issues with my connection stability, so they replaced it with a fairly common Motorola Surfboard (I can't remember the version). I kept having issues with very small bits of lag, so I replaced it with a Motorola SB6121, and I've been issue-free ever since.

As for DOCSIS 2 vs 3, you may not need 3 right now depending on what Time Warner has implemented in your area, but they most likely will in the future. It's what ISPs are using to increase bottom-line bandwidth.

even if you are bumped down to a slower speed, docsis 3 modems will allow channel bonding as long as your levels are good so that congestion will be less of an issue unless its the whole node/cmts

They may choose not to work with a DOCSIS2 buy your own modem. If you do buy DOCSIS 2 make sure you keep the receipt and can return it.

Just checked my current modem and it's a sb5101 which is DOCSIS2. I can get one of those for $20 off ebay. Of course I could also get a sb6141, or something like that, for $45-$50 which is DOCSIS3. Such decisions...

I bought a Zoom modem/wireless router from Best Buy last January fpr $120...was on sale recently for $100...One less thing to plug in if you have wireless network....range works pretty good...I have it upstairs and get a good signal downstairs...

It is Docsis 3.0 and I have had zero issues with it...took about 20 minutes to get online after I called TWC to provide them the MAC address...

I know we're splitting hairs, but I wouldn't pay higher than $18 for the SB5101.

$50 is a fine price on the SB6141, if you're getting the standard manufacturer's warranty coverage.

I would love to replace my uverse modem but at&t pretty much has locked out any aftermarket ones I could get, their router/modems are g with 100mb wired. I have a netgear 3700 but it went out and I haven't replaced it yet as I'm waiting to see how ac goes. would like to reduce the clutter when I do eventually replace the 3700.

I'm stuck with Comcrap so I went with a Motorola 3.0 modem.

If I was you I'd jump on this deal http://slickdeals.net/f/6200802-Cis...ndition-for-29-99-Free-shipping-at-amazon-com

I was considering cancelling my service and going with a different provider.
I may pick one up 30 bucks for this thing is sweet.

Also seems like docsis 2.0 support the speedboost that the docsis 3.0 doesn't support from reading online.
that's probably why people see speed drops with the Docsis 3 modems.

I get 30/1 on my RCA rental from time warner. Not sure what speed i'll get with this cisco modem if I were to change it. (in NY/NJ ).

I just replaced my rented RCA modem with the motorola SB6121. Got a nice speed boost (from 10 mb to 20 mb down) for free, and I don't have to pay the ripoff rental fee anymore.

I handled it by getting my own DOCSIS 3 modem. Then I demanded that TWC give me a lower rate for the hassle. I ended up spending something like $80 for the modem but got ~$75 off from TWC. I only need a DOCSIS 2 modem, but figured it wouldn't hurt and maybe someday I'll pay for faster internet.
