Question for you guys ...

I just picked up the RB1 drums. While at Best Buy they had these PDP - Official Rock Band Drum Silencers (made by Pelican) which were rubber soft tops that basically stuck on.

Here's the review of them at IGN.

I'm just curious if anyone used them. I couldn't find any drum sticks at BB to test them out, and the pads were out of stock at the one I went to so I didn't purchase them. They did look and feel like they would work wonders on dampening the sound, but I was just wondering if anybody around here had used them before and what their thoughts on them were.

They have em at other BB's in my area but before I pick them up I was just wondering if anyone has an opinion on them.

I've heard good things, but then I've also heard good about homemade ones using felt or mouse pads.
It'd be worth it, the RB1 set sounds like horses' hooves on cobblestone.

Yea I saw some staples mouse pad one, but it was like $12 for the mouse pads, then some rubber cement (which I don't have) and then some work as well.

I'd rather pay $20 for some pre-made ones heh. But like I said I just wanna know if anyone on here has personally used them.

I haven't used them but a friend made their own using the mouse pad method and said it works great. I can only assume the store bought ones work fine too

I have the blockhead pads, they seemed to work well in sound reduction but I did hear a few complaints from people playing on hit detection. So I guess it's a trade off of sorts.

which ones, the ones I linked to?

i actually just picked tem up but haven't opened them yet. I'm goign to see how it goes w/out them first and see how loud it is.

also, while it's been aboiut a year since i played the drums on my friends rock band, did they change the pads on the RB1 drum set? I coulda sworn the drums I used at his house were not as soft as these are. these pads are like slightly rubbery but don't have much "give". for some reason I don't remember his being that way, but like I said, it was almost a year ago heh.

so after about 2 songs i put the dampening pads on, and man tey work great.

when hitting in the middle of the pad it is softer for sure (noise wise) but when hitting on the outter ring area (where the plastic is) holy crap it's so much quieter. It's quieter tan hitting in the middle of the dampening pads. i find it more comfortable trying to hit the edge as well so this really helps.

i didn't notice any hits not registering at all either.

That's good to hear, ourbeast. I've been repeatedly tempted to picm these up, but didn't want to stick them on only to find playability suffers.

i mean i only played 2 songs with it heh, one on easy, and one on medium (which raped me btw and I got a damn shin splint after) and no notes or anything were missed at all.

i just got these and applied them, but actually havent played a song with them yet. however, prior to sticking the pads on there, hitting the drums went *clack clack clack.* after, it was more of a thud, which is MUCH more tolerable. the noise is reduced, but the kind of sound makes a huge difference. based on random banging, it might require harder hits, but i'll have to try later.

You can always use the ghetto method. Wind a bunch of rubber bands around the tips of the sticks themselves until its decently thick. Looks a bit goofy, but has the same quieting and bouncy effect without the sensitivity issues.
