anyone using protools?!

I have a friend of mine who is about to buy me a big computer and I was hesitating between 2 processors... now I know what most of you will say, ****** Intel... yes well I feel the same way... But I have to say that in audio/video intel as usually been better... Now I've been trying to get some specs of internet and some benches but its almost pointless... so what do you guys think between a

AMD Athlon 64 4400+ X2 Intel Dual 820 2.8 GHZ
Asus A8N-E Asus P5WD2

Both machines would come out to be about the same price, as the intel, he'll have to buy back some ram. He curently runs a Prescott 3 GHZ and is hoping to obtain a performance increase of atleast 30%.

Any feed back would be greatly apreciated. I thank you all in advance.

What type of interface is he using for protools. If he has a card that might determine what motherboard he needs to get (some of them are 64 bit, some newer ones are pci express).

well I know that he is using an external sound card, but so far nothing that really fits inside... his budget is a bit limited but he has shown me pics of cards he would like to get. Next time I get to talk to him, I'll ask him the exact specs of both softwares he is using and the model of the sound card in question.

Yeah, most protools stuff is very pricey so you should find out what he's using first and then build a pc around that, rather than the other way around.

ok, so the USB card he is using is a MBOX2 ans he is using Protools LE with Waves Diamond bundle... not sure what that is, but thats what he has ^^

thanks for the links animal, unfortunetly there isint much on they're web sites about hardware, every issue there has mostly to do with software. I would just like the opinion of anyone who has tried protools with either Intel or AMD to tell wich will give me the best bang for buck,

the X2 would be a better choice by far. the X2 is just a much better chip. its a class above the 820D. what are the prices you have for the chips and motherboards?

the prices actually pretty much even themselves out. I can get the processor for 550$ and the board for 225$

For the Intel, I can get the processor dirt cheap, about 275$, but the board ends up being almost 100$ mroe expensive, not to mention another 100$ for another gig of ram in DDR2.

I could also go for the dual 920 with 4 megs of L2 cache!!!! but is that extra cache really worth it?!
