i am also seriously thinking about getting one of these very nice small XPC's as well.

i have just bought a nice 15" LCD monitor and it would be lovely to get an XPC to sit behind it, or on the side of it......all so very small!

thing is though is that i would have to sell my soundblaster live drive, no need for it cause there is no room for it, only one drive bay
also i would have to get an external modem, unless i use the onboard sound, which i cant imagine being very good.
also i would have to sell all my AMD stuff, motherboard, CPU, could i use my DDR RAM on the ss51 motherboard? it's PC2100 crucial stuff.

if i do sell all my stuff i want it to be worth the change, if i am gonna run into problems with it the i dont really wanna get one.

come on guys, someone must have bought one by now! tell us what it's like!

i've got one in a box in my livingroom, my processor, vid card and memory arrive tomorrow and i'll be putting it together then. i'll let you know how it goes, but i did have one of those ams g-boxes until recently (it was so cute that my wife took it from me and now it's hers) and it was (is) a great little pc.

It is all about style and looks!!!

I have build a SS40G and surprisingly fast w/ only AMD XP 1500. (except I stuck w/ G4 MX PCI)

Unfortunately, I have a Sony Black LCD, then I have to paint the case black.
To complete the look, you will spend a lot more than you expect.
Such I have to get a Black Crystal Mouse.
and now looking for a Apple G4 USB Pro keyboard.

ps. It took me entire week just to get use to the Crystal mouse.

K9jamie2833- If I'm not mistaken one called the Sn40 based on the Nforce 2 chipset is coming out soon.
I want to know if the problems reviewers had with memory and stability are still lingering.

I'd so get this if it just had one more CD bay! Just one more! That's all it would take!

Well, CD-RW and DVD combo drives have finally come into their own now. They're usually a good price (a bit less than buying two drives seperately) and are almost as fast. I see NOTHING wrong with a 16xDVD+16xCDRW(or even 24xCDRW) in a singe drive.
Which would fit perfectly in one of these beasts.

bluemax,
that's exactly the setup i have in my (wife's) gbox and what i'll be putting into the ss51g. the toshiba 16/10/40 cdrw / 12x dvd is $88 at mwave.
gbox - sb audigy, toshiba cdrw/dvd, gainward gf4/4200, p41.8a, 512 crucial ddram.
i've been using this one for anout 3 weeks and havent had any problems whatsoever. it's a great pc and does everything that my main rig does. the ss51g will have the same components in it when i get the proc/mem in todays fed ex.
i actually think that consumer pcs will all be going this way soon. big towers will only be for enthusiasts and power users / servers in high end workstation use.

i agree, the big companies like dell, time, tiny, mesh, matrix, IBM will slowly start to introduce PC's based on the shuttle's XPC's and in a few years time i can see most people having smaller and smaller cases.

i see this as a good thing, for ages i have wanted to see a PC that is roughly the same size as a VCR, if this becomes the new standard for PC cases then it would be so much easier, you could put it among your stereo seperate system without it looking out of place.

From what I have seen of a good friend's system, the shuttle is quite incredible. I have said this before, but it is sooooooo quiet it is almost unbeleivable. the ports on the front make for a good ease of use. It is a ah heck to put together, but runs well.

I have seen the Shuttle XPCs at MicroCenter. Hopefully, that is a sign that these machines will soon be everywhere. If the NForce2 version is a screamer, ...

The one bay thing doesn't worry me too much, I would use a USB 2.0 Burner and my Pioneer DVD in the bay. Foofoo, did you try the onboard sound? I would like to use that if it is any good so I could use the PCI for a modem.

hi all,
well, it's together and working great. it went together pretty simply without any problems.
system is:

shuttle ss51g
p4 1.8a
512 ddr samsung
wd 120jb
toshiba cdrw/dvd drive
gainward gf4 4200 golden sample
using onboard audio.
win xp pro

i've got about 12 gb of software, games, os on the disk.

benchmarks (with all default settings everywhere) look like:

3dmark 2001 se - 8573 3d marks
pcmark 2002 - cpu = 4428, mem = 4221, hdd = 1110

3 hours and it's great so far. everything is running well.

axia 55 - the onboard sound is ok, acceptable. not as good as the audigy but totally usable without attracting attention to itself.
abaez - i've got a gf4 4200 in mine and some of the reviewers put gf4 4600s in theirs. apparently the gf4s fit just fine.

if anyone has any questions, let me know.

well i have just been looking around and have found a UK version of the GBOX, it's called the I-CUBE

here is a link to a forum that is about to review the P4 version, and i have posted in that same thread with a link to the UK based website that does the AMD version of it called the A-CUBE

http://forums.pcpowerzone.co.uk/showthread.php?s=&threadid=449

foofoo, if i may ask, what are the dimensions on the GBOX you have comapred to the SS51? from the pictures i have seen it looks as though the GBOX is a little bit bigger than the SS51

also if you could post some pictures of them both together, just to get an idea perhpas, if it's not too much trouble

also which do you prefer the looks of and which was the easiest to work with? which has the best features in your opinion?

hi k9jamie2833,

foofoo, if i may ask, what are the dimensions on the GBOX you have comapred to the SS51? from the pictures i have seen it looks as though the GBOX is a little bit bigger than the SS51

you are right, the g-box is a bit larger than the shuttle but only by a small amount. by my ruler, the shuttle is 7.8" wide, 7.5" high (including feet) and 11.7" deep (including cover screws)
the g-box is 8.4" wide, 9.5" high (including carry handle and feet) and 12.6" deep.

also if you could post some pictures of them both together, just to get an idea perhpas, if it's not too much trouble

usually this wouldnt be a problem but my digital camera is dead and my new one wont arrive for a week (canon a40 from the hot deals forum) if you are still interested then, let me know and i'll post some.

also which do you prefer the looks of and which was the easiest to work with? which has the best features in your opinion?

this is a hard question. neither is really set up for overclocking and with the cramped case, you probably wouldnt want to anyway. i've found both to be very stable with no crashes or problems.
the features on the shuttle are better than those of the g-box, shuttle has firewire and spdif, both have usb2.0.
i think that the g-box is more stylish and has the better look, but he shuttle is more functional and the smaller size helps in a cramped desk environment (especially since you can put things on the flat top of the shuttle, like a 15" lcd monitor)
the assembly of the shuttle was easier since there are some cables that get in the way of populating the pci and agp slot together in the g-box. but you only do this once and it does fit after you fiddle with it a bit.
all in all, i think that i prefer the shuttle box for my uses. on the other hand, my wife preferred the g-box, whick is why she took it from me, and her sense of style is better than mine
hope this helps.
