Anyone using Windows 2000 SP3?

After some time with WinXP, I've decided to go back to Win2K.

I looked some previous threads on Win2K SP3, but most of the posts were from right around the time it was released and there wasn't much of a conclusion about it. One thread did mention something about DRM, is there any concern with this in SP3?

So, for those who have been running SP3 for awhile, is it worth using over SP2?

I run win2k and sp3 and have no problems with it and it did fix a few problems I had before.
I see no reason not to use it.

I use SP3 but really had no need to install it. Installing SP3 didn't seem to screw anything up and I can't tell that performance is lower.

Then again, SP2 ran like a champ as well.

3 boxes with 2000 and 2 with 2000 server SP3. No problems yet related to the SP.

i run it. other than the udate thing (which i turned off) i have no problems with it. i can't really tell the difference between sp2 and sp3, but sp3 is the latest so i assume some stuff was fixed.

The only thing I noted was a drop in SCSI performance, which according to some peeps is due to MS adding in the same code that causes the sluggish SCSI performance in WinXP unless you change over to dynamic disk. YMMV however as I have it installed on several SCSI machines with varying results in performance.

i have had problems with logging off in win2k after sp3 was installed. This has been replicated across dozens and dozens of workstations at my work place and I have heard others on the internet complain of the same problem. It just takes an extended period of time to log off now (30sec-3min). Besides that there have been no problems. Anybody know how to resolve this issue?

I don't use SCSI.

So basically what I'm hearing so far is that there's no outstanding reason to go from SP2 to SP3?

That's what it sounds like, but i think the statement "Your results may vary" is in order, since every computer acts differently, so you may have some problem...

That is a weird problem because the last time I reformatted my HD and reinstalled Windows, I didn't have that problem.. and I've been running SP3 for a while now. Now all of a sudden sometime last week it started taking forever for it to log off. I'm wondering if it has anything to do with all the crap I'm running in the background. It doesn't take up THAT much memory, but it is quite a few things. In any case, I'll live with it... untill I get so annoyed with it that I AGAIN reformat my HD and start all over again. It seems like I do that every couple of months.

I found out the loggin off problem is not a sp3 problem is it from one of the pre sp4 (post sp3) patches. Maybe they will resolve the issue in the cummilative sp4 service pack.

Running sp3 w/ no problems except after installing it, windows update installed "security update 329170" after which shut down took forever. Unistalled this security update and 2k / sp3 works great and shuts down right now. Of course every time I go back to windows update it wants to reinstall it, but I "just say no". I wish i could take all credit for this little fix but I can't. I found it on another forum/site and credit should go to them. Now if I could just remember...

W2K SP3 is good
(just disable the naggy auto-menace,,, I meant AutoUpdate program)

Abnormally long shutdown are usually the result of a service being unreachable.
For instance, I accidently removed MSinstaller program, which produced your symtoms.
I fixed it by getting the installer from the MS support site.
It can also arise if you disable a service needed during shutdown.

I suggest looking in your event logs for errors. It will identify what service is having problems.

I ordered the SP3 disk for 10 bucks.

I did that because of all the online updates that someone has to go thru if you only have SP2 (or SP1 for that matter)
There a serious security flaws fixed in all the SP's.

I hate the online update process.

When I needed to create a new build from original W2K CD ... it took me 4 hours of updates to get to SP3.
(with a million reboots ... and that was using DSL!)

Get the SP3 on CD ... you wont regret it at all.
The SP3 CD has all the rollups ... (SP1 SP2 and SP3)

The workstation around here all run Win2K Sp3(well cept for mine), no complaints related to Sp3.
They're all IDE though, and the few Windows servers we have are running NT4, so I have no experiences with these SCSI problems people are talking about.

Running SP3 on all nine of my domain controllers and everything has been fine. I have also recently installed the following post-sp3 hotfixes (no problems so far):

Q320206 Q323172
Q323255 Q324380
Q326830 Q326886
Q328310 Q329115
Q329170 Q329834
Q810030 Q810833
Q329414(only installed on machines using MDAC)

In regards to Maryhsu's post-I installed the Q329170 hotfix, and have not encountered the "slow shutdown" problem.
