full tower computer weighing prolly around....30-40lb insured for about $1k?
*via USPS/Fedex/UPS, whichever is cheapest/safest!

I need to mail it from TX to NY for college since I'm not driving and i want to get an estimate on how much it would cost. Thanks

About $45 USPS priority (that's how much it ran me to ship a 47Lb computer $200 insured)

Dang..this will be fun! I have to mail 1 monitor and 2 full tower computers.....I could prolly just not ship them and take that money and build a new computer seeing how components are so cheap

Go to the ups site and they have feature to figure out the exact cost of shipping. Just put in the weight and size of the box. You will save hella money to pack it yourself. I shipped a 17" monitor, and for them to pack/ship it UPS was $100. I packed it for about $15, and shipped it for $50.

go to fedex.com. I believe that they have a package calculator... You may have to signup for an annoying/free account first.

For those of you shipping computers, how did you package them?

I'll be shipping a system cross-country sometime next week & I'm a little unsure about how to go about shipping it. Is the box the case came in (with the original fitted styrofoam) sufficient? Or should I order a custom double-walled box to give 3" of space all the way around it?

I want it to be safe, but I don't want to spend a fortune shipping it.

The box that came with the case should be sufficient provided you have all the original styrofoam stuff. You might want to add some styrofoam peanuts in there just to fill in any gaps

Airlines will allow you 2-3 boxes of up to 75 lbs of weight.
The monitor when packed properly could be shipped as one box.
The towers, could be grouped together and shipped as a second box.

As a college student, you should be able to live off of a steamer trunk and a carry-on.

If you are not traveling alone, additional luggage can be assigned to a companion.
